What does the word "continental" mean regarding vintage mens slacks from the 1960s?

My name is Ron, and I collect mens clothing from the 1960s and 70s. Sometimes I see the word "continental" in old clothing ads, but I'm not sure what that means. Does it mean that the style originated in continental Europe? Thanks for your help.

it means it has a very Euro style.. French or Italian.
the garment was made in the USA.
not traditional styling.

Even if it is made in the USA in the "Euro style" are they still considered continental? Thank you.
