THE SEASONAL COHERENCE CHALLENGE

A core principle of classic style is coherence: individual components must cohere to produce a single, unified effect. Coherence is of various types, and is itself dependent upon a prior notion of appropriateness: appropriateness to an occasion (work or sport, for example); to a time of day or night; to a location (city or country, for example); and so forth.

And coherence also depends on appropriateness for the season.

That’s this week’s challenge: seasonal coherence.

What season? That’s your choice. Style Forum has members on both sides of the equator and at varying distances from it. Whichever of the four seasons you name, there will be SF members currently experiencing it so far as their climate is concerned.

And every season has its own conventions: color, texture, fabric, and even individual items of apparel have long-standing seasonal associations. Effectively employing these is the challenge this week.

So choose a season, tell us what it is, and dress accordingly. The outfit must be worn this week, no earlier than Sunday, 13 September. It must include:

(1) shirt and tie;
(2) jacket (suit or odd);
(3) trousers;
(4) shoes.

You need not fit all of these into a single picture, but you must provide photographs of all four. No more than one entry/outfit per person and no more than four photographs per entry, please.

The choice of season is yours, so no matter where you are on the planet you’ve got no excuse not to enter. Equator? No problem. Antarctica? I look forward to it.

Let’s see if we can make this thread a valuable resource for those who in the future are looking for examples of seasonally coherent combinations.

Schedule: Entries must be posted by midnight GMT on Saturday. The poll will go up some time on Sunday, and will close at midnight GMT on Monday. This will allow one additional weekend day for fits while still making it possible, in principle at least, for the winner to post the new challenge on Tuesday.

Entries which make me think “Damn, that’s a perfect (spring, summer, autumn, winter) outfit” will get my vote.

Gentlemen, let’s do this.

Cheers,

Ac

Perfect. If I wear a tie this week I'll be sure to enter this challenge.

If I am to post on Friday, it will be a post of seasonal incoherence (or at least meteorological incoherence - clothes too warm for what will be a warm late summer day), but the occasion requires it. More on that as it happens . . .

@upr_crust - The challenge will run at least through Saturday. See post 8.

Friends, I ask for feedback on scheduling options.

(1) Last week entries closed at midnight on Sunday, and voting ended at midnight GMT Tuesday. That’s one option. It allows most of the weekend for people to enter, but it means the soonest a new challenge can appear will be Wednesday.

(2) The alternative would be to close entries at midnight on Saturday, and end voting at midnight GMT on Monday. That would allow entries on Saturday but not Sunday, but would allow the next challenge to begin, at its soonest, on Tuesday.

Please share your thoughts.

Cheers,

Ac

I think the date may be slightly wrong

If you're referring to the "earliest wear date" of 13th, that's Academic's way of saying "I know that you good iGents are always seasonally coherent, so feel free to post one of your sprezzily thrown-together fits from a few days ago."

Ah.

Mostly I was defining what I meant by 'this week' when I said 'The outfit must be worn this week', but I also want to include a couple of weekend days if possible.

Dare I hope you'll be among those representing the Southern Hemisphere?

Friday's a genuine early autumn day and will be twenty degrees cooler than today's high. Probably in.
