A few close encounters with "A" listers:

A few years ago on on a business trip in LA, I was at a business associate's home for a private dinner. While the hosts were preparing dinner, I sat outside on their backyard patio with a drink in hand and they invited Garth Brooks over for dinner. Apparently he was a neighbour.

I had no idea who he was and during casual conversation, he hinted that he was a singer/songwriter.

I asked him if he was performing in bars and small dinner clubs until he hit the big-time.

Another time, I sat beside Scarlett Johannsen on a connecting flight back from Japan. She didn't talk much and her personality indicated it didn't matter. At the time, I also didn't know who she was, until we landed and one of the flight attendants informed me who I was sitting with. It still didn't mean anything.

I thought she looked like a manicurist, albeit with sugardaddy to afford the fare.

i've read many similar Scarlett Johannsen stories that have her come off as a *****...i find it funny/ironic, she tends to give off down to earth vibes in a lot of her interviews, or at least tries to.

Shame about SJ.

Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters (and a small entourage) showed up at my house in Madison, WI after their show at the Kohl Center. It was a couple of years ago when they were on tour w/ Bob Dylan. My bandmate and I were practicing in our living room when we heard a knock on the door. We opened it and they all yelled "Trick or treat!" The smell of booze almost knocked me off my feet. At first I didn't realize who they were and I thought it was just some Grohl look-a-like with a bunch of other people. After seeing Taylor Hawkins I put it together and became a little awestruck. They stood in our living room and listened to us play a song. Then we walked with them to the bars while we had a very pleasant chat.

I guess they had been wandering around the neighborhood and happened to hear us playing. It doesn't get any more unexpected than that.

Encounters for me are just up close sightings, never had any common ground with these people...

Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson at a remote cafe in central Idaho.
Jamie Lee Curtis (at the restaurant my mom attempted to refresh her(Curtis's) memory of a time when they were in a hot tub together in college.... it was quite embarrassing)
Mickey Rooney at the Ivy in LA
Charlton Heston and me in an elevator at the Hay-Adams hotel in DC. I was only 12 at the time but remembered him as the "NRA guy".
Nicholas Cage... lived across the street from him for some time... nice cars!

One day, I think when I was in high school, I answered the phone at home. The person on the other end asked for my father. I said, Just a minute.

My dad talked to this person for a couple of hours. Afterward, he told me that the guy on the phone had been Tom Cruise. He and Nicole Kidman wanted to adopt a baby. My dad had to tell them no, since at the time, they weren't married, and that was something Catholic Charities required.

Growing up in LV, I saw a number of celebrities: Richard Pryor, Dennis Miller, various boxers and other athletes, Patrick Swayze, William Defoe, and Wayne Newton, among them.

But my favorite experience w/ a celebrity was when I was walking down the street in NYC a few years ago, and I passed Mira Sorvino. A few steps later I turned to watch her go, and she had turned to watch me! A woman of great beauty, intelligence, and taste.
