I imagine I can't make a defense of not being defensive without sounding defensive so I won't. I've worn this vest many times before and people rarely like it. Many people have said quite directly that they don't like it and I'm fine with that. I just didn't care for DC's delivery given his history here dealing with unkind comments and his reaction to them.

Fair enough. My intention is not to stir up an argument, it was a genuine expression of surprise. But I see what you mean re. DC's comment. Carry on

I did not mean that commentary in a bad way. It was just the try to say, that in this case I do not like the fit and especially the vest. If I hurt your feelings, I want say honestly sorry.

Why I think a madras vest, in general, doesn't work:

Because it is soooo busy (it's perhaps the busiest pattern there is) and surrounded by things which are significantly less so, it looks almost like it's been photoshopped in. This effect is probably also the result of the vest being at a different depth as the jacket. So taken together, it looks off.

The only time I can imagine a madras vest working is in a madras three piece. Which would be a bit much anyway.

What I don't like about madras is that it completely obscures the shape and fit of the garment. A bit like this:

AS, the vest is still too short (or the rise on your pants too short). I don't think the patchwork vest works with these other elements.

If I might make a left-field suggestion that could very well suit your aesthetic, I would like to see you try the vest with a blue/white seersucker suit. It could be a train wreck, but in my mind's eye, I see a suit that's strong enough to stand up to the boldness of the vest, plus some of the dissonance that seems to float your boat.

Also, I looked inside my jacket and found a fabric label (doh!): Lessona Super 120s is what it says. By coincidence, there's a picture of a similar cloth from them in the Unfunded Liabilities thread today.

It would be the latter. The vest placement is pretty much spot on. I could whip out my big red pen and mark up a few of Savile Row's best to illustrate, but nobody wants to see that.

:p
