9 years ago my girlfriend got a Sharp xv-h37vua projector. Despite being the size of a Buick and having out-dated technology, it's served our needs very well (i.e. gives us a 5 foot wide screen when we want it, but doesnt clutter our 10x13 living room up with a massive appliance in the corner). It finally **** the bed a few weeks back and we've been researching a replacement. The good folks at ProjectorPeople.com (expert customer service BTW) recommended the ax100 panasonic, which sounds excellent. It runs about $1299 after rebate.

Before we pull the trigger on a new one, I wonder if there's a reputable place to buy refurbished projectors? Note that we're not really in the market for top-of-the line, we're just looking for something to watch movies on.

There's a 720p projector (made by Optoma I think) that runs about $900. That would be my suggestion. Use it until the lamp dies and then buy a 1080p.

Epson makes a couple that retail at about $700-800 at C. City/B. Buy and retailers of that ilk. I would go to the sales sites of most of the major manufacturers(Sony, Panasonic, et.al.)-you could get lucky and get a refurb with a manufacturer's warranty.
