Mr.Pollock's point about unstylish (American) teens backpacking prompted this thread.

Surely with only a giant backpack, a person can still be stylish--such as say a khaki suit, a change of underclothing, an hardy watch like a Rolex Chronometer and various shaving requisites.

A person needn't look like a cheaply dressed brute while backpacking.

Backpacking is one area of my life where style has NO priority. I don't backpack in urban areas though. Even then, any kind of functional backpack over a tailored jacket would be extremely uncomfortable.

This is backpacking style.

The sophisticated backpacker LabelKing alludes to would be best served seeking equally appropriate lodgings, lest he find his expensive timepiece liberated by local sleight of hand magicians or urchins (now you see me now you don't), or indeed, bunkmates with whom he's sleeping 4 to a room (and that's in a 'safe' hostel!)

Comfort aside, would such a man or woman willingly entrust their stylish garments to the local dhoby, or equivalent clothes-washer?

Backpack for the adventure, and the road less travelled. Style definitely has no priority.

I would say part of being stylish is knowning when wearing a suit is not appropriate or called for. Backpacking is one of those circumstances.

To foil those insidious street urchins, the style-appropriate traveler would use an innocuous vintage Rolex.

The gratifying thing about khaki--suits or not--is that it can easily washed without sacrificing the "look".

Indeed, one of those Bedford jackets would make for some hardy outerwear while not looking like a North Face clad bear.

I know--it's so easy and yet you never see it.

Operating under the assumption that at least some American backpackers have some money, then finances shouldn't be an issue.

It would be feasible with a combination of EG, Margiela, and Filson, I should think. It'd probably be much easier in the fall or spring though- carrying a backpack in summer is simply too hot for most stylish clothing.

For all you style heathens, it would be appropriate to take a look at how the British traveled. This is what a British handbook on campaign camping suggested: "The first axiom for camp is... do not make yourself uncomfortable for want of things to which you are accustomed". This man even had a bespoke shaving brush commissioned for his travels: http://72.14.253.104/search?q=cache:...ient=firefox-a

What about one of those traditional canvas and leather rucksacks? http://www.backpackgeartest.org/revi...pack_front.jpg

Is this thread for real? Anyone insinuating people should dress well while backpacking has never tried to pack a backpack. There is limited room and most of it cannot go to flashy clothes. A few shirts, one pair of pants, that's all. Your clothes will smell and be very wrinkled by the end of the trip anyway, no reason to bring the good stuff.
