Harry Rosen, Hugo Boss, and JP Tilford.

Thread Starter

Hey,

Looked around for a thread that already addressed my questions, but was unable to find one. If it exists already, please send the url. Apologies in advance if there is.

I was at Harry Rosen today and looking at a Hugo Boss suit. Always wanted one, but am seeing that there are a lot of negative thoughts towards quality for the price you pay.

The SA made me try on some JP Tilford suits and told me that they are a better quality then HB. Is he saying that because its true, or because JP Tilford seems to be their house brand.

I play on spending 2k on a couple of suits, and like the service at HR. Looks like I can go with 1 HB and 1 JP Tilford as they are in that 1K range each. Does anyone have any recommendations before I go in and drop the money. Kinda new at buying this quality of suits, and have normally stuck to Kenneth Cole as they fit well at my size (46T)

Any help is welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry for the late response.

"JP Tilford" is the brand name that Samuelsohn suits are sold under at Harry Rosen. If you look at the tag on the inside pocket, it says "J.P. Tilford by Samuelsohn". I think the hangers also have "J.P. Tilford" and "Samuelsohn" on them. I think the J.P. Tilford brand is also used to sell some Samuelsohn products in the U.S.

There are a lot of message threads that discuss Samuelsohn suits, but they are generally considered to be of high quality by many SFers, especially given their price point. While not as cheap as some other brands, Samuelsohn quality is probably comparable to suits that cost a lot more. And for what it's worth, Samuelsohn suits are made in Montreal while Boss suits are made all over the world. That being said, just because something is made in Asia doesn't make it of poor quality. But some people prefer to buy local when it's an option.

I don't own any Hugo Boss suits, so I can't comment on them from personal experience. As you mentioned, many SFers don't think very highly of Boss quality. I think that one of the arguments is that Boss suits are only slightly cheaper than, say, Samuelsohn, but the quality isn't nearly as good. I believe that all "mainline" Boss suits are fused, while Samuelsohn suits are fully canvassed. I think that some of the higher-end Boss lines are half or fully-canvassed, but they probably cost more than Samuelsohn.

One thing that Boss probably has going for it is that it has a larger variety of styles than Samuelsohn, including slimmer and more contemporary options. However, assuming that you like the styling, and it fits you well, it's hard to go wrong with Samuelsohn. But just my two cents, your mileage may vary.

Samuelsohn blows Boss deep into the weeds.

Are the JP Tilford Samuelsohn suits cut any less conservatively than the standard ones?

OP, if you must have Boss, HR charges about triple what they can be had for at just about any outlet mall. If you plan to buy from Harry Rosen, I think the choice is simple (see above)

I would say they are pretty similar, although my understanding is that the JP Tilford models are exclusive to Harry Rosen (at least in Canada).

I know this is the common sentiment on SF. But I don't own anything Boss, so I've never been able to make a somewhat fair comparison myself. Is my suggestion above accurate, namely that the overall quality of Boss just doesn't match up to the price?

I believe that HR have their own models. OP really has to just try them to see which model fits him if at all.

I have one of each. To be fair, I paid double for my MTM Tilford/Samuelsohn over Boss on sale and it shows. HB material and construction is inferior. OTR for both brands at HR should be pretty close in price. I will say one thing for Boss, the cut serves me well and although it may not last as long, I will continue to wear it (mostly to interviews).

Yes, I'd say that's accurate.

Take a trip out to the Rosen outlet in Mississauga when you can.  You can often find Samuelsohn suits priced in the $600 - $700 range.  Unbeatable value at those prices.  Frankly, even at full retail you are going to have to spend considerably more money to get better quality than Samuelsohn.  I have probably 8 Samuelsohn (RTW and MTM) suits and a handful of Canali, Zegna and D'Avenza.  There's a reason I keep coming back to Samuelsohn.

I popped into the store yesterday to ask about the Private Sale. It officially starts on Thursday, but they will honour prices earlier if you ask. However, not everything is on sale (for example, solid colours are likely not included). But if you are in the market for something patterned/striped, you may be in luck.

I don't think you need an invitation, just ask them and they can look up an item and tell you if it will be discounted.
