Trying to find non-ugly walking shoes

I've been looking for a new pair of shoes for months, years even, and can't find anything that seems right. Maybe it doesn't exist.

Usually, I'm walking around London, UK, and if the weather's bad -- rain or, occasionally, some light snow -- then I'll wear walking shoes, something like this:

They're fine, you know, and about the least-ugly I've found in this category, but... well, they're not gorgeous are they? They're not so bad for when I occasionally go for a walk in the countryside, through mud and over rocks, but whenever I see people in the city wearing shoes or boots like this, or others by Merrell, Salomon, Brasher, etc, I always think they've got lost while looking for a mountain.

I'm not looking to dress super-smart. I have a couple of pairs of C&Js which I love, but most days I (like everyone I know) wear jeans or, at a push, casual trousers. But even so, I can't help thinking there must be something that's a little more "city" than the above.

Criteria:

  • Must be very comfortable for long walks
  • Must be waterproof
  • Must be suitable for wet city walking, and for spring/autumn country rambles
  • Must be available in the UK
  • Must be smarter than this kind of thing:

700

Ugh. Is there such a thing? Something between ^ that and something like the C&J Snowdon, which, lovely as it is, seems rather over the top for my needs? Maybe trying to find one shoe for casual, wet-weather, London wear and walking up Scottish hills is a fruitless task?
