"Gunboat" shoes with suits. An American Phenomenon?

I used to wear gunboats with suits, but decided a couple of years ago to wear my sleeker, nicer dress shoes with suits. Since then I've gotten rid of all my gunboats except for a couple of pairs that I wear with casual clothing.


You and I are almost on the EXACT same trajectory.

Though I do believe the Japanese men of style are also fanboys of the gunboated suit look. I don't have an issue with it, just feel like its not what I like anymore. I do think it can be done well, even by we slovenly Yanks.

They're a good starter shoe IMO for people who aren't used to wearing a lot of leather soles and aren't as careful about where they step as some of us may be. Besides which they're pretty much the only non-boot shoe I can confidently wear outside during winter.
