I was set to go to a friend's surprise birthday party today on the complete opposite side of the beltway (I live in Northern VA and this party was in Anne Arundel county, MD. So I leave at 1 thinking an hour would get me there by 2 (his surprise was going to take place at 3). NOPE! ON a Saturday afternoon it took me 2 hours to make it HALFWAY (30 miles). I eventually had to give up and turn around as the traffic according to my phone had no end in sight and I'd probably be stuck in my car another 90+ minutes trying to make it there which would've been completely pointless. Nothing like spending my Saturday in traffic as bad or worse than rush hour and not being able to make it to my friend's surprise. :fu:

Ikea. I went with my father once to buy something once. In addition to dreading putting the contraption together after you purchase it, I did not realize you had to go to a warehouse storeroom, climb to the back, pick up the box, place it on a trolley, pay for it, and then take it all the way to your car. Whatever happened to service?

I was half expecting they wanted me to go to the kitchen and cook the meatballs before buying them.

Why do you think it is cheap? It is because everything is tightly packed (less transit and storage space) and you load up and put it together yourself. The directions are supposed to include a few beers in the "required tools" section.

Honestly, the best stuff at ikea is far better than anything else at the same price (and they have good designs). The cheap torsion-box furniture (like the LACK series) is all **** that comes apart or the veneer scratches or whatever...but the nicer pieces using real wood (and even some of the MDF pieces) are really quite legit.

Its not for everyone and you can't really fill an entire house with it (or it just looks like an ikea catalog) but its a great place and provides a great service.

Also, their new salt and pepper grinders made out of a column of marble are pretty baller....once I get my motorcycle working again, I am probably going to head out to ikea for a set.

I think "Big Mary" is more of a British term referring to someone less than completely manly, a pansy, girly, chicken hearted, lilly-livered, panty waisted, soft cock..

Big Mary for what its worth is both that and a gym bunny probably on steroids who is also known as a Muscle Mary. You know the types who grunt so hard when doing weights, my view is that they sound constipated and want to have a decent crap.

Oh and Fang wasn't that a great result in State of Origin on Wednesday. Go the Blues.

Thanks for the kind words dudes.

Well, another sort of macabre post... Went to dinner to celebrate my dad's birthday and got called in to work, major news happening. So I'm sitting at dinner emailing contacts and don't have all their deets in my phone so I could only get a few off. Get home, finish up the work blah blah blah.

My great aunt came out to dinner and she's becoming increasingly more and more difficult to deal with. She's close to 80 and having extreme difficulty moving around. She's also either losing it or decided she's old and not giving a **** and has gone so far she's lost all social graces. Had several very embarrassing moments tonight and in the past three months when I've seen here there's been a pretty substantial and continual deterioration from visit to visit. Not sure how to phrase this more delicately but I almost don't want to deal with her anymore in that its just so much work now and embarrassing social situations.... I dunno man. This is one of the other reasons I don't want a family or anything is that when I get old and infirm, I don't want anyone to have to deal with that who isn't a professional... stay at hospice have a priest bring me the Eucharist that's all I need.

Oh and w/a may not be in NYC when I'm there later. :(

They make good hotdogs.

I prefer their meatballs.

Go the Maroons!

I'm sorry to hear about the difficulties you've been having lately, ed. I've actually had very similar thoughts about not having a family. But I don't want to die all alone either. (I think having only hospice workers around you counts as dying alone.)

The **** is this ****?

It is me expressing my support for the Queensland Maroons in the State of Origin series.

All my life, people have called me a queen, probably owing to my regal bearing or something. Because of that, I feel a strong affinity for the Queensland team and cheer for them in the State of Origin series.

They can't finish the construction on the Beltway soon enough. The rate of these random accidents (on the weekends even) has gone way up. I can't imagine having to commute on that nightmare every day.

someone bought the drawing I wanted!!! :plain:

Maybe they bought it as a gift for you.

Sometimes if there's only one of something available and someone I care about expresses interest, I go and buy it. At some point they go back to the store and notice with sadness that it's not there. Shortly thereafter I present it to them as a gift. Maybe something similar happened here. (But maybe not too, I guess.)
