He's not asking if he should wear a tux he's asking what is a good tux he could acquire for $2k or 2k sterling he didn't specify. Regardless, you're a jagoff.
Since you're in the UK, I would look at Ede and Ravenscroft. They would serve you well. It would be nice to get the white tie rig, but black tie is more practical (since you could use it in the future). So (for black tie): jacket, trousers, vest or cummerbund, pleated or marcella shirt with detachable wing collar, bow tie and patent oxfords or pumps.
He must be a social pariah who doesn't get invited to anything.
Well, he did ask what he should wear, not where he could find a dinner jacket.
I should also add the following:
(1) Cambridge is one of the few places where you can wear a dinner jacket twice a week, so how come the OP doesn't have one already? He must be a social pariah who doesn't get invited to anything.
(2) Except for Magdalene, which is white tie, all the balls are overrun by pasty English girls in hideous ballgowns accompanied by boorish drunks who will throw up on the OP's outfit. Nobody will look at what he wears, so why bother? Rent a dinner jacket for the ball and buy a real one for proper occasions.
(3) May Balls are in early June and we are now in early February. What's the rush?
(4) I'm not keen on the Ede and Ravenscroft in Cambridge. They don't know half as much about clothes as they pretend they do. Go to London.
