i think many may cast Audrey Tatou (and Maggie Gyllenhaal) as unconventional because they are cast in unconventional roles. this does not make their looks unconventional a la Emily Watson or Samantha Morton (both of which i agree with).

As an example, Audrey Tatou looks absolutely conventional in the dreck that is "The Da Vinci Code" (i still can't believe i sat through that whole movie).

Really? Crap. That's a dealbreaker.

I'm moving on.

Mmmm... Suzanna Hoffs used to be quite yummy back in the day. Haven't seen her recently. Just saw a film with one of my all-time fave UCBs the other day: Janeane Garofalo. She can fluctuate between fairly schleppy and awfully yummy. I ran into her and the actor from L&O:SVU once in the Village -- they were pretty cool.

Not everyone's cup of tea.

I'd also like to second the Giada nomination.

When does an unconventional beauty become 'pretty'. Who is this, anyway?

Totally agree with this. Janeane can look quite cute at times and at other times totally dreadful; a cross between a Berekeley birkenstocks-wearing granola hag and a hairy armed lezbo (yet another Berkeley archetype).

Thats Maggie Gyllenhaal. Just to be fair about the "unconventional beauty" part, she frequently goes sans-makeup which lends her sort of a "grandma-ish" look. The above picture is, of course, a studio shot. The below picture is not so flattering. Sometimes it comes across that she doesn't really give a crap how she looks. I still think she's cute though.

Susanna Hoffs looks, well, the same.

Which is to say, hot (though I would say somewhat conventional hot).

i used to like her on SNL. when they needed her to play a sexy woman she would pull it off. (wait, that doesn't sound right. you know what i mean.)

Oh, one more UB from the land of adult entertainment: Belladonna. She borders on ugly but does things you wouldn't consider with a farm animal -- she looks good doing it and I thank her for this.
