I notice that several users on SF wear a spread or point collar without buttons. Are button collars going out of style?

Are button collars out-of-style?

1. it's probably more important which collar shape and style flatters your face (example I find the soft button collars, usually point ones, that 'roll' tends to make people look like they have a fat roll around the neck)
2. it's a regional thing, so button downs (where you can see the buttons) tends to be a more american/trad thing, whereas spreads are more european (english?)
3. the forum seems to have swayed more towards the spread collar look, or button downs with hidden buttons (but undone for sprezz!)... I blame a few prominent members wayw pics
4. eh, there's some fashion trends with spread collars, but the mainstream is always so slow to adopt that who really knows. button-downs do feel a little old-fashioned, but they were never a 'style'/fashion item anyway.

About a 1/3 of my shirts have button collars and I tend to I wear button collars when not wearing a tie, and therefore when not wearing a suit or jacket. Now that I think about it, I think with me it has more to do with the shirt materials on the button collar shirts. They're all more casual, heavier coarser textures like oxfords and I don't think I would buy a button down in a poplin.

It is not a matter of out-of-style. Buttondown collar shirts are more casual and they shouldn't be worn with a tie -even if you can see many buttondown collars with a tie in the US-.
I like buttondown oxfords and linen shirts, but i wouldn't wear them with a suit.

Please elaborate the part where you wrote that button downs shouldn't be worn with a tie. I think you may have forgotten to add "imho".

Amen. BDs are a great look: they're a little less formal, but not inappropriate for a suit, and are the main line style in the Northeast. I wear them exclusively, except I wear hidden button-downs for formal occasions.
There's a definite correlation in this thread between post count and approval of BDs.
