Black oxford, cap toe, high quality with thick soles
Light cross-trainers or running shoes - light and strong
Good quality hiking boots (e.g. some of the nicer Merrills)

There was a time when these were all I had, and I was able to make them work with anything.

3 is far too few - in any event:

(a) black oxfords for business / formal;

(b) brown chelsea boots - e.g. RM Williams Craftsman;

(c) brown / burgundy (e.g. cordovan colour #8) open laced brogues with rubber sole for wet weather

Both (b) and (c) are very versatile, and can be worn with chinos, flannel trousers and jeans.

What is missing are hiking boots, sports shoes, loafers, chukkas - equally essential, or close to.

Why wouldn't you not wear loafers with jeans?

just sayin
I can only imagine myself ever wearing a pair of loafers with jeans - or casual cotton trousers - and only in suede.
