its a gold daydate president rolex or whatever
It's a very valuable watch. New DDs in Gold are priced at $22K.

It has a very reliable movement but get it serviced ($425) if it is 5 years or more past last service. A good steam cleaning and dial polishing will bring it to new and a service is fantastic-they do great work at the Rolex Service Centers (use Beverly Hills or Dallas over NYC if you can).

Funny this should come up now; I tried this one on today. Perpetual date, 1979 vintage, very lightly used, it seems. Any thoughts?

+1 especially if it comes from your dad
My dad wears a G-shock, but if he had a watch that he thought was pretty special and handed it on to me, I'd wear the m*****f*****, at least on occasion, if it was the tackiest, ugliest thing I'd ever seen.

Yeah, I'm not really a watch guy so so opinion on this is worth even less than it usually is, but that's a handsome watch (and goes well with the shirt and jacket you were wearing in the picture).

I agree. The gold watch with a gold band is a little much for me, but I really like the looks of that watch with the leather band.

I know that many here deride Rolex for being over-priced for what it is, and some of their stylings are undoubtedly over-the-top. However, I also think they make some classic looking pieces. This is a good example of that.

You can arguably get more value for dollar with Omega-maybe 70-80% of the build/service (that's a maybe on service imho) quality at 60% of the price, but then if you factor in resale value Rolex wins. They hold their value extremely well. My watch (Two Tone DateJust also handed down from my Dad) has doubled in value over 20 years.

For me, Rolex, especially gold ones, are just far too much "bling" and smacks too much of a sort of "I can afford this much so I will spend it". HOWEVER in this case, it was handed down to you from your dad, so, if it matches your style, go for it

Family heirloom if nothing else. Oh and you may want to take Artisan Fan's advice and have the watch serviced if it has not been in years. Rolex and many other high-end timepieces are very sensitive instruments; they are not "fire and forget" like a G-Shock or a Vostok. Plus it will help it retain its value, if you are interested in that aspect... Edit: I was referring to the OP's watch.

yea i think iv3e mustered up enoough confidence to wear it
but see that was the thing..like you can wear an expensive ass suit and really nice shoes and most poeple will just know that you are dressed nice, they wont know that you spent five grand on your outfit, but if you are wearing a gold rolex it just screams out too much, idk its kinda loud and saying look i have one and you dont idk maybe im thinking about this too much

That type of watch is a dress-casual watch in the sense that it can be somewhat dressy but also suitable for casual situations.

My father had one like that, with a bark-textured band, and a nice white dial.

yea thats true, but i think spending 150-200k on a car might seem a bit more "reasonable" then spending over 20k on a watch

i wonder how much it would cost to get the gold bracelet aken of and a band like that put on
it def looks more wearable then all gold
are leather or crocodile bands a lot?
bracelets def are..adding one link to the gold bracelet was about 500
