There is a lot of great stuff under $75. What kinds of things have to tried and enjoyed?

Talisker 18, although it is running $79.99 in NYC. Great dram.

So far just that Glenfiddich and I really liked it...75 is just a number I threw out, 30-50 is the ideal range

OK. Do you like peaty or smoky malts? If so, Talisker 10 is in that range and is great.
If you like a bit of peat but not a lot, snap up a Longrow CV before they disappear.
Otherwise, Springbank 10 is a great all-around whisky, and more in the style of Glenfiddich.

A word of advice: don't get hung up on the age of the whisky--it is not an arbiter of quality or taste. Generally, older whiskies cost more, but that is not necessarily a reflection of quality.
Case in point: Lagavulin's special 12 year-old bottling is younger than their normal 16-year-old, but it is more expensive and (IMO) better.

Best advice I can give: try a lot of different whiskies. If you find one that you love, buy it.

I second both the advice of trying as much as you can and Springbank 10. I'd also suggest Highland Park 12 (especially now if you can find one of the gift packs with the mini-bottle of HP18), Cragganmore 12 or Clynelish 14.

Nice, thanks a lot. The Longrow sounds interesting, going to check that one out.

Lots of good bottles in the $50 range. If you like Glenfiddich, you'll definitely like Glenmorangie Original at around $35-40. Both are really sweet, but i find the Glenmorangie a bit more complex and enjoyable.

Another couple off the top of my head...Highland Park 12, Bunnahabhain 12, Bruichladdich Laddie Ten, Yamazaki 12. All of those, last I checked, should come in at or around $50.

+1 on the HP 12. Excellent recommendation. FYI, the Longrow may be hard to find, as the distillery is replacing the CV with a different release.

Great bottle. Oddly, I actually prefer the Talisker 10 to the 18...

In the around $75 price range I like Aberlour and Talisker 175 Anniversary Edition.

my wife brought this for me from the UK
