Those are driving gloves

When you lose an argument with your wife, you win.

Sure--but they aren't "fun."

Well said. Not a fight/argument worth "winning"

So why wear them? Surely they were not functional, either to keep fingers warm or for driving a car.

I quite like the felt boutonniere in my avatar from Strasburgo in Japan. I think it can look good. But most others I've seen are either gaudy or girly.

hMM.... the flower AND the pocket square plus a loud tie? seems a bit much... maybe lose the hanky if you're wearing a flower?

Felt flowers are awful. If you want, wear a real flower. But never to work unless you work at a bridal salon or florist shop.

The only time I've ever worn a flower on my lapel was the day my fiancee said yes to my proposal and gave me one out of the flowers I'd gotten her. I can't imagine many other circumstances where it wouldn't look contrived.

I think I will wear a flower in my lapel one day or so this week, a real one now that spring is in the air. Not a fan of felt flowers. Plus, I have that little thread behind my lapel that is dire need of use and attention

So why wear a pocket square, or a tie, or a anything other than a single-piece jumpsuit?

I'm not saying one should only wear what has a function. But when something is intended to look "fun," it always looks bad.

i also think that these things are really ugly, but aren't you being a huge hypocrite? isn't sprezzatura the definition of injecting fun into your dress? also, some people don't view men's clothes in such rigid puritanical guidelines. there's following the rules, but there's also dressing without any soul.

Since when am I pro-sprezzatura, and since when does sprezzatura mean "injecting fun into your dress"? In what sense is my choice of dress "puritanical"? And how is that equivalent to "dressing without any soul"?

Too many false, hazy, and poorly linked premises to even begin with a substantive response.

you're right, leaving your collar buttons undone is very traditional.

Not true. You can wear fun things that look good. It is all how you wear it and your attitude. (Of course not wearing "fun" to court, funeral, important meeting, job interview)

Not trying to beat a dead horse, but I feel like I need to clarify...

I am not a huge proponent of these things. I do not want to buy one and I have never worn one. I just defend the right for men to wear them. I am not saying they are better than real flowers and I am not talking about the huge flowers that have been posted in this thread thus far.

I am talking more about the small, felt flowers being worn by the fellow who mentioned his avatar.

I guess I was wrong and hopefully losing this argument will actually "win" me something later tonight. I might go home, lift some weights, cook a steak and smack her ass just to let her know I am a man.
