Dress shoes not fitting perfectly, what to do?

I have a few pairs of dress shoes and boots that are roughly a half size too large. What are somethings I can do to make it fit properly?Originally Posted by ranker

You can use a tongue pad or an insole to try and get a better bit. However, unless you're only trying to correct a sizing issue that is a hair off, you might be unhappy with the results. Certainly worth a try though. I have a pair of Edward Greens that's a half size too big and they are oakyish with an insole but they are a secondary shoe so it doesn't bother me too much. For shoes in my primary rotation, I'd want them to fit as perfectly as possible.

Sigh. I was hoping for some magic recipe. I've tried tongue pads & heel grips but to no avail. I was wondering if "1/2" or "3/4" insoles would help alleviate the fit issues. I guess onto B&S my shoes go.

If your shoes are 12D's and pretty and you want to sell them for cheap there is no fix and you should contact me.
Otherwise, insoles help. I've had good luck with ones that are designed for "work" shoes, as they give enough lift to shove your foot up in the shoe and generally make it work well enough to be comfortable.

What's the real downside to having your shoes 1/2 size too big? I would guess that most of my shoes are. I like to have some wiggle room for my toes.

I had a problem with my Alden loafers size 9 C/E. The shoe repair shop recommends a sole insert. They sell them in leather or you can go to a bigger drugstore and find a Dr. Scholls, whatever. He said to take out an inner sole from an athletic shoe(they are removable) and test it out. It helps! Still not perfect. Leather inner sole inserts are like $40 bucks.
Funny, I found a pair of AE Hancock size 11B and tried them on for fun, and holy crap! They kinda fit! I can tie the shoe laces firmly and the length is a bit bigger and my heel lifts slightly but I think I can swing this.
