I've seen many other posts on pre-workout supplements and it seems like many people here find them to be a waste of money. However, after work I need a little energy boost before I workout. The problem is that any pre-workout supplement that has beta-alanine makes me break out pretty badly. Anyone have any recommendations?

and you already get some protein and carbs before your workout and it still doesn't help you?

That had beta analine in it too though. You could just take straight ephadrine.

Caffeine works pretty well. Most people don't really need anything fancy.

I appreciate all the responses, but most of these suggestions have beta-alanine in them including Jack3d and Black Powder. So far I've found the following:

USP Labs - Jack3d - works great but has beta-alanine
VPX - No-Shotgun - works great but has beta-alanine
MRI - Black Powder - have heard good things, has beta-alanine
Controlled Labs - White Flood - heard good things, has beta-alanine
MuscleTech - No-Xplode - stops working after a week, no beta-alanine
Gaspari Nutrition - Superpump250 - works ok, nothing special

What I would recommend is try out different products and see what works best for you. I have tried pretty much all the popular pre-work drinks before, and jack3d has worked best for me.

what I would recommend is growing a pair and not feeding the supplement industry money

if you drink some coffee but tell yourself its a super elite pre-workout booster i guarantee you'll get the same effects

edit for constructiveness:

i am willing to wager you have not perfected your exercise/diet/rest/recovery routine enough to warrant "needing" a pre-workout supp. this is a case of focusing on the 2% of the picture while the other 98% goes unseen, much like any other pre- or post-WO issue. guys like arnold, while gifted with insane genetics and other beneficial attributes, did not use jack3d or any of that crap and I guarantee you he would still eat you for breakfast. maybe he didnt work out after work like you do, but unless you're doing heavy physical labour all day, actually going in the gym and working out will provide you with an energy boost.

Eat something prior to your workout with enough lead in time that it can help. When I'm low on calories I feel sluggish and tired. You don't need a pre-workout supplement. I take whey protein as a post workout supplement, and I know I don't need that, but for me its more convenient based on my schedule and life than trying to up my protein intake using food.

Chocolate milk is post workout recovery based on the 4:1 protein and carb ratio. I'm not saying it works or it doesn't, just saying its advocated by some as post, not pre workout drink.

jarude;3779135 guys like arnold said:
I don't think anybody would need an energy supp if they were juicing as hard as Arnold did.

Of course you are right that most people don't really need any supps beyond whey and maybe creatine and some caffeine.

If you're TOO tired to workout without an energy supp you shouldn't be working out in the first place.
