Earplugs and a sleeping mask. Benadryl works really well too - it's non-prescription, the only side effect is drowsiness, and it wears off by the time you land. I usually go for all three when I go transatlantic, wake up feeling great. Window seat helps too so you don't have a flight attendant talking and passing drinks to your neighbor (not to mention having to get up when they need to use the lavatory).

You really do need the sensory deprivation though, especially for the 2 hr meal service they always seem to offer on the 8 hr flights...

I had this problem until recently.

I fly quite a bit, I have just flown Brisbane to Anchorage, via Vancouver and Seattle.

I tried everything to sleep over the past few years but nothing worked, even the window seat with earplugs or the supposedly extra room in business.

You dont want prescriptions but its the only thing that finally worked for me - something called imovane. Doctor reckons its not as strong as regular prescription pills and wont get you hooked on it.

Have it on an empty stomach and it will knock the **** out of you, and you dont feel groggy when you wake up.

I took one about 2 hours into the flight, probably got around 6 hours sleep. Not enough but better than nothing.

The following night in Vancouver I took one before bed and slept a solid 11 hours.

Ready to go in the morning.

I think it's essential to change into something incredibly comfortable...

Loro Piana makes slippers that I put on because shoes aren't comfortable to sleep in. I also have a lightweight blanket made by them I use and that eases the transition somewhat. A nice whiskey doesn't hurt either.

Watch the sunset, it provides the body seratonin. Bring one of those U shaped neck pillows, listen to some pleasant music on an ipod and put the blanket over your head.

And for goodness sakes wear some slippers, I find it unfathomable how people manage to bear the entire plane ride without taking off their shoes.

Maybe also try:
Hitting the gym or swimming a bunch of laps a few hours prior
Getting up extra early that morning

I pass out almost instantly.

I got noise cancelling headphones and between that, sunglasses, and just flying at the wrong times, I tend to pass out when I wake up, I am all fucked up.

pull an all nighter the night before... sleep like a rock. best part: you dont' even need to hear them talk about seatbelt safety.

WARNING: be sure to stay awake before you board your flight.

question for sf dads:

would you drug your kid to sleep in a long flight?

we haven't. seriously, not to be paranoid, but on a long flight you are a long way from medical attention - I don't really want to **** around with my kids.

we've done a few relativly long flights with the kids, and by preparing enough entertainment it has gone smoothly.

A decent meal with a couple beers in the terminal and book. Knocks me right out but I rarely have trouble falling asleep.
