Lakers Rumors: Buying or Selling Jerry Sloan as Mike Brown's Replacement in LA

Jerry Sloan is the first name to surface as a rumored replacement for Los Angeles Lakers head coach Mike Brown. Brown’s on the verge of losing his team after only five games of the 2012 season.

On Wednesday Alex Kennedy of Hoopsworld reported a source predicts Brown will be out sooner rather than later in L.A.

Jerry Sloan to L.A. by December 1. Nash and Howard are the new Stockton and Malone. He wants a ring, not to mention the money. He didn’t seriously consider Orlando, Charlotte or Portland [openings] over the summer because he knew Los Angeles would open up.

Sloan retired in February 2011 after 23 seasons as the coach of the Utah Jazz. He has left a possibility for a return to coaching if the right opportunity comes along, according to Sam Amick of Sports Illustrated.

That opportunity is knocking Mr. Sloan.

The star-studded Lakers are 1-4 for the first time in Kobe Bryant's 17-year NBA career. It can only get better from here, right?

Lakers vice president Jim Buss weighed in on his team’s struggles and the current feeling about Mike Brown within the Lakers’ organization in a report by Ramona Shelburne of ESPNLosAngeles.com.

"You don't start 0-3 for the first time since we've owned the franchise without being on top of it," Buss said. "No matter what, you have to be aware. That doesn't mean change is coming. That just means you have to be aware."

While acknowledging the struggles of the team, Buss didn’t go as far as to blame Brown for being the cause for the early-season woes of the Lakers.

"So either the system is flawed or something's going on. Or, like the Triangle, it's very hard to pick up and understand. I'm not a basketball mind like he is or the players are, and the players are fine with it, so I just have to be patient."

It’s good that rumors are just rumors and that people’s jobs aren’t being tossed around on a whim after only five games. However, the conversations are happening and that’s how personnel changes begin.

While transitioning to the Princeton offense has clearly been a mistake so far by the second-year head coach, the lack of depth on his aging roster shouldn’t fall solely on his shoulders.

Once Steve Nash went down for a couple of weeks, the lacking depth became painstakingly clear to everyone paying attention. Why hasn’t the team made a move for a point or combo guard to fill in for him until he can return?

There are clearly a lot more factors at play here than the coaching of Mike Brown. After all, in basketball, sometimes it takes time to build chemistry with a new team and a new system. The Lakers are working with both of those challenges this season.

In the end, winning cures all things. Mike Brown’s team needs to step it up on both ends of the court and play for their coach if they believe in him as much as they do.

The margin for error has been reduced to nothing. Everything will be under a microscope in the coming weeks or until they get this season back on the winning path.

That, or until a coaching change is made.

Despite the vote of confidence from Buss, if things don’t turn around, the likelihood of a potential move like this will increase as the pressure mounts in the owner’s box.

I would love to see Phil back for one last run, quite honestly.

*edit*

I wouldn't be surprised. He might be expensive but Lakers are already invested in millions plus I don't think coach salary counts towards the salary cap anyways.

I think Phil wanted somewhere around $11m per year? Could be expensive but I agree they may just go all out (hopefully)

Plus they really do need to win this year or get very close to it to get Howard to stay.

if Deron made Sloan quit, how's he gonna deal with ***** ass Dwight Howard?

Hopefully Sloan can handle it, plus Kobe will keep him in check because you know he'll slap him upside his head if ***** up with his ring.

$10 they call Phil

$10 they've already called Phil, Sloan, D'Antoni, and probably ******* Larry Brown already.

I find it really hard to believe they fired Brown without already having a pretty good idea with who's replacing him.

i don't know about sloan guys. i love him and i love the way his teams play, but if folks were bitching about brown's princeton offense, with all of its flexibility and options, what are they going to be doing when sloan tries to institute that old-school highly patterned offense utah always ran. that always seemed to be a perfect offense for a team with a lot of athletes and not a lot of stars (and yes i know they had karl and stockton), but when you've got a lot of really smart, really gifted athletes like kobe, gasol, howard and nash, i'm not sure it's the perfect fit.
phil could probably be talked into it for the money ... i think the way his career ended is a sore point for him (i've got a friend in the organization ... have heard that), and there's nothing the big guy likes better than riding in to the rescue.

I think Nash is perfect for Sloans system and Pau & Howard could benefit from that, especially Pau. Kobe will have to adapt again but at his age, he really should be making that transition (though the slump is bringing out the old Kobe back out) anyways.

That death stare by Kobe is very powerful though.

If I was the Lakers' front office, I would book a flight to Durham, North Carolina, with lots and lots of money in tow. Unlikely they'll be able to pull that off, but stranger things have happened.
