Email Signatures for the Unemployed and Looking

Thread Starter
Graduation season has past and as my job search begins I cannot help but feel vulnerable without my old email signature which denoted my university affiliation and (when I was working) place of work. Now unemployed and graduated, I have just my name, email, and phone number.

In applying for jobs, sending out inquiries, et cetera should I strengthen this signature with an URL to my LinkedIn or similar websites?

I guess the format would be something like this:

John Smith
XXX-XXX-XXXX | email@gmail.com
LinkedIn: http://linkedin.com/in/linkedinname

For replies, I would list only my name and phone number.

Two more questions: (1) is the inclusion of my LinkedIn profile appropriate and (2) is there anything else that would be useful to include?

I don't see what's wrong with listing your alma mater

My alma mater has email forwarding, so if someone sends mail to my school address I can still receive it, maybe yours has the same thing. I don't see any harm in including your LinkedIn profile, but I don't think anyone will actually look at it.

Maybe get a personalised e-mail adres? As far as I know (never had to have a go) it shouldn't be too complicated, and I assume that it looks more professional than a gmail one.

Do you get to keep your uni email adress? My uni gave me a life-time email adress when I covocated. So I fully intend to use that for all job applications and the like.

As for including a link to your linkedin profile in your email signature .. I'm not sure. To me it seems to be throwing your qualifications around a bit too much. Sort of like wearing your diploma around your neck.

Some people, tend to include their degree info at the end of their name in their email sigs. IE:
Dr. John Smith, B.Sc., Ph.D.

I don't get this, if you think of his LinkedIn profile as his resume and home page, then why shouldn't he include it in his signature, especially if he's job hunting?

I say add it.

linkedin is perfectly appropriate. Profiles from Facebook or AshleyMadison.com are not.

Tell me why AshleyMadison.com should not be on one's resume.
