So I keep hearing moderntailor brought up over and over again in the last few months. Are they better than mytailor? Do they offer better bang for your buck (if you want Thomas Mason silver or comparable fabrics) or better construction?

I'm pretty happy with mytailor, but I'm wondering if maybe I'm missing out on something and don't even realize it.

Mytailor offers good service but the product is poor to mediocre construction. At a minimum of $100 a pop, I find much better RTW dress shirts. Even the ill-fitting Nordstrom dress shirts (fabric woven in Italy, Made in HK) are of better quality. If you spend money for the more high end shirting fabrics, going to mytailor for construction is not a good investment. Jantzen seems to be the polar opposite: crap service but substantially better quality, and cheaper. To be clear, I don't recommend any of them. I have no experience with Modern Tailor. All my shirts these days are RTW made by a French company no longer in business but the quality is superb and cost effective, even with $15-$25 in alteration when necessary.

I've had shirts made from both Modern Tailor and Mytailor. Modern Tailor made the shirt and got it to me in about 2 weeks. No problems with it. Mytailor made a tuxedo shirt for me and Joe really went out of his way to get the shirt made to my specifications but they got it wrong the first time and the whole process took 9 months in which my black tie affair I had planned to wear it to had loooong passed.

Moderntailor:

Quality is impeccable - or they remake your order.
Shirts arrive in 10 days on average.
Thomas Mason is Goldline for $136 after coupon.

. There is no better price. Goldline selection is a bit mediocre at the moment -- hope they expand past the weird twills and offer the range of classic checks and stripes.
Collars look great while worn and do not splay open/flop.
They will accommodate whatever details you wish/require usually at no additional charge.
They communicate effectively and respond to questions with 24 hrs.
You can track your order from production through shipping.

In short, I am

over this company. I have been ordering immediately upon receiving an order and plan to continue till I run out of fabrics I'm interested in.

My one MyTailor shirt cost $150 for Silverline, took eight weeks to arrive, but was constructed very well. I found the standard collar shape not attractive and dated. Has the 80s curved look.

No comment on Modern Tailor, which I haven't tried, but my experience with MyTailor is the opposite of this. Quality has been very high. Stitching is always neat and clean. Buttons are sewn on nicely and do not come loose. Collars are nicely made. My only complaint with MyTailor's quality might be the interlinings. The soft ones are fine but the medium, which I would prefer, seem a little bit like cardboard. But, without a doubt, all my MyTailor shirts have been far better quality than all but the most expensive RTW shirts I have had. The other problem I have with MyTailor is the length of time for delivery. This past week I received a shirt I ordered in December because the fabric was out of stock. This happens regularly if ordering from their less popular fabrics.

I'm surprised there are quite a few people calling out mytailor for construction here. I've had tons of their shirts and a half dozen or so Jantzen shirts. It's true mytailor doesn't do little details like split-yoke construction, or triangular gussets, but other than they seem to be of the same quality (at least the ones I ordered.) My only quality related gripe would be that the regular thick MOP buttons start to chip after a few washes. You can get upgraded ones for $12 that are pretty much invincible.

I've only used moderntailor, not mytailor. The biggest thing they have going for them, in my opinion, is their willingness to implement improvements. I've been happy with the normal aspects of their service (fit, quality/price ratio, delivery time) but its their recent changes (thick unbranded MOP buttons, split yoke, more collars, one off requests) that have kept me coming back. There's been one specific pattern with a specific color that I haven't been able to find on their site, but other than that I can get just about everything I want from them. Plus, now that we can reuse the coupon, it makes it an even better deal.

Sorry I can't comment on the MT vs MT question.

I've had some construction problems with mytailor as well. I had fraying on the cuffs of one of my shirt, but they fixed it at no charge. Another shirt has slight fraying at one of the seams. The shirts are a little over a year old, but I haven't worn them that much.

I use mytailor and was measured in person and communicate directly with Joe. Joe is very accomodating with measurement details, although they didnt use the buttons i supplied. The shirt fit is not as nice as my bespoke shirts, but it is still pretty damned good. I have not used moderntailor, but Thomas Mason Goldline $136 as one member said is insane. But there has to be something said too see the fabric and feel it in person.

How do you get Thomas Mason Gold line for $136? The fabrics are $169 and the coupon is $20; that leaves you at $149 before shipping and MOP buttons/split yoke.

I thought mytailor did offered split-yoke construction but you had to ask for it. Did you try asking for it specifically?

I've also had a near-opposite reaction than this one. Construction on the 25 or so MyTailor shirts that I own is nearly impeccable. I've had no quality control issues to speak of, the buttons are sewn very well, and the stitching and seams are very well done. The house collar styles can leave a bit to be desired, and over time, I've had to come up with my own default collar specifications for my orders (they are more than willing to accommodate these sorts of requests, at no extra charge).

Fabric selection is fantastic, though a bit on the pricier side for online HK MTM.

My only real complaints with MyTailor have been threefold:

1) It takes a few test orders to dial in a proper fit. Despite the measurements you provide or are measured to, your first few shirts will come out baggier/bigger than you want. You need to insist on a close-fitting garment and make tweaks to get there.

2) Shipping is very slow.

3) Lately, as someone else pointed out, there have been a lot of stock-out issues with fabrics. They don't inform you about these problems until such time as your order would ordinarily be getting ready to be dispatched (about 6 to 7 weeks after placing the order). At that point, you're asked to make a new fabric selection and must wait all over again. This is incredibly inefficient and frustrating, and it speaks to operational issues they need to address. That I've had this problem twice in a row with my last two orders speaks to a pattern on their part, and not just to an isolated incident. If this keeps happening, they will lose at least some of my next business to tentative exploration of other makers.
