My parents are going down to Cozumel, Mexico and Belize City next week, and asked me if there's anything I wanted them to get for me (for my birthday I guess). I'm wondering if there's anything you can only get down there, or just something worth keeping an eye out for?

It can be either clothing, art, antiques, or the like. I was thinking along the lines of a sterling silver belt (I know they're a major producer of precious metals), or just something that can't be found in the U.S. Also, I'm learning to make clothing for myself, so if there's any high quality/unique fabrics (for casual summer wear) that either country is well-known for, which I can't get here, please suggest that too.

Or, if you just have any suggestions for any 'must-see' locations or activities, I can pass those along to them as well. Thanks for the tips!

Ask for a Molcajete that's made from volcano rock in Mexico. That's for food if you don't know what that is.

Not unless they feel like making a detour to Taxco-2.5 hours southwest of the DF and no where near where there are going to be. I can't think of anything you could want in Cozumel or Belize City. Unless you like kitsch. That is not a joke, I appreciate kitsch in an appropriately morbid setting.

I went to Ambergris Caye, I'd reccomend a very stylish bullet proof vest.

As a Mexican native I suggest tequila, only top brands, from the duty free shops in the airport

Most of the common tourist areas in Mexico have figured out that their market is American tourists and have adjusted their prices to match. The days of finding dirt cheap stuff is pretty much over unless you go way off the beaten path. You'll find the same mass produced **** all over the Yucatan peninsula, at prices that you could beat easily on Ebay. I believe the silver stuff is that same, they're coasting on reputation now, just hoping idiot gringos can't remember how much silver costs at home. Possibly you could bargain a good price, but all the guys I talked to forgot how to speak English when bargaining began despite having excellent English beforehand.

Also they like gouging you on the exchange rate if you don't convert to the local currency.

What he said. Great trips if you go for scuba or snorkeling, though.

Unless they enjoy thronging hordes of tourists I'd avoid Cozumel and stay in one of the less populated areas of the Maya Riviera, such as Akumal. They'll probably go to Chichen Itza and/or Tulum, but I'd recommend that they also get to Coba to see a Mayan city in something close to its unrestored state. Also, they should snorkel in a cenote for a truly unique experience. Akumal is a great place to see sea turtles close up.

If you're a scuba diver than the Blue Hole is something you shouldn't miss, but it depends on your proficiency.

And if you're a muff diver, be sure to check out the pink hole. Stay away from the brown, of course.
