Ah so, you visited BIG, huh???

You missed out on the two Blue In Green diners in Philly-----they were so good. But that has nothing to do with 45RPM/PURE BLUE.

Did you sign their guestbook?

I'll try to compare the two.

Fit:

Sorahikos have more of a classic fit. Size down and they'll have a nice '47 501xx look to them. They taper down to the ankle, but not drastically. The seat is a bit relaxed.

XX-003s have a pretty fitted seat, with a straight leg that's about equal to Nudie Regular Ralfs (at equal size, although a 30 in XX-003s is definitely smaller than 30 in RR). The leg opening is definitely smaller than the ralfs, however.

For me, Pure Blue wins in this category. The seat fits especially well (though I agree the crotch area is a little bit close, much more so than 5EP or other American brands).

Construction:

IMO, 45rpm wins in this category. The Pure Blues are pretty experimental in how their made and have some interesting nuances such as thick threads with less stitches per inch, but the Sorahikos are really solid. They're both excellent, but I like the construction better on the R's.

Denim:

This is purely up to you. Sorahikos have such a beautiful color and the denim is super fancy, but they certainly have less character than the XX-003s, which are rough, bobbly and incredibly slubby. They're both fantastic, but my take is the 003's, because I already have a couple denims similar to 45rpm (5EP denim is very close).

All in all, it comes down to price and preference. On a scale of 1-10 they're both 10s in my book.

Visited yesterday before I left NYC to return to Philly. Walking around SoHo in 95 degree weather is... not cool. But BiG was worth it. Signed the guestbook, and now I'm all annoyed once again that Philly has basically no men's clothing scene. But I guess that's another excuse to spend weekends in NYC.

For real----Head Start stopped selling mens shoes, Addresse stopped selling mens clothes (was the only Barbour stockist in Philly, I think).

It is getting bleak.

Izzo is getting to be pretty boring.

ARGH!

Wow, off topic again.

thanks brian for the breakdown. i can't wait to have my own pair of PBs. still wondering whether to get the xx-003 or the ai-001. i'm leaning toward the ai-001s at this point.

XX-003s are definitely more 'normal' than the ai-001s, but are not ordinary in any sense of the word. Given the choice between the two, I would take the 3's because I like the way synthetic indigo fades. The AI color is really brilliant though.

it will be interesting to see how these PB's wear. they have a pair of distressed xx-003s at BIG and from far away, they look absolutely stunning. up close, you could see that it was artificially done so it wasn't as special. apparently, however, they crease at the right spots when you wear them.

I've seen pictures of the distressed 3's online (really need to get over to BIG. I'm jealous you get to hang there any day of the week) and they do look really nice. As for them creasing in the right spots... Definitely. I found them to fit around the crotch in a similar manner to Dior Homme (but with a much rounder seat in back).
