Eh, I'll believe it when I see it. I really doubt they'd make such an elementary design mistake, but if they did, I'll eat my words.

Just to play devil's advocate, though: only Gizmodo has reported that so far. With the number of press that had hands-on time with the device, I'd expect at least at one other source to corroborate (as opposed to just repeat) the report if it were a real issue. Who knows, dude may just have been typing too hard, which is totally unnecessary with a soft keyboard.

Also, if I were using it on a flat surface, I'd probably prop it up with the case/kickstand thing anyway, for a slightly more comfortable angle. Not that that would excuse the flaw (if there is one), but still.

It would be damn near impossible to touch type on this thing or use it laying on a table/lap/flatish surface. Talk about neck strain. I laughed when someone on here said they have been waiting for laptops to lose the keyboard. a device this big that is entirely touch loses a lot of ergonomic function and makes it unsuitable for long periods of use. If it were a convertable or had a slide/tilt keyboard (ala HTC Tilt) that is a different story.

Edit: Also if Gizmodo is talkin **** about it, its gonna probably flop. Those guys are the most rabid Apple Fanboys of any general gadget site.

im sorry, i was just skimming this thread and i saw the phrase "laptop killer".

laptop killer? are you guys kidding me? it can run ONE APP AT A TIME. ONE APP.

inexcusable. wtf was apple thinking? they better have an alternate "iSlate" tabletpc-type device up their sleeve as well.

the thing is, tons of people are gonna buy this thing anyway, which disincentivizes apple from stealing their own customerbase by creating another better device.

schumpeter's "creative destruction" at work, i suppose.

I disagree, it depends on how well it is implemented.

you say it would have to inevitably induce neck strain, when the position relationship between hands, head, and tablet surface is exactly the same as when you write on paper with a pen. I don't see the problem.

with regard to the keyboard and whether it will work, it's all up to the software or firmware. If you type your best and the technology accurately understands what you are trying to type, it will work. Just look at Swype http://www.swypeinc.com/

But a Pen and paper is not media rich. Do you think people are really going to be using this purely for some sort of note taking thing with hand writing recognition? I dont know about you but when I am typing a report or email or surfing the web I am not staring off into the distance like I am when I am taking notes on a notebook in school (looking at my prof). Not to say its impossible to type without staring at my screen but if I had to rely on something with zero tactile feedback I would have no idea if I was typing correctly or if my fingers had slipped off the home row.

Er, what about all the writing that isn't taking notes? The kind where you're generally looking at what you're writing? Or am I the only one that does that?

Who in here has worked in tech support? I'm sure there's more than a few people, right?

Well, do you know the guy who couldn't move files from one folder to another? Or someone who struggled to upload photos to his laptop? Or the older lady who didn't understand why she wasn't receiving email?

These are the people who will buy the iPad: the consumer who has no damn clue about computers. The whole collection of computing metaphors ("file-and-folder" and "desktop" and "clipboard") don't make sense to these people. The iPhone UI does away with these metaphors, and they're betting people will buy as a result.

If you're saying this thing will flop, you should consider the big picture. Just a thought.

i'm just glad it wasn't priced outrageously.

*******, its more choices for the consumer. and if its really good at what its supposed to do like an iphone (being a phone) or ipod (music player/storage device) then we all win.
