Regarding scented candles.

Any recommended scents for a single guy to have in his place? I want it to smell nice in here for when I have guests over, but nothing frou frou. I picked up a "vineyard" candle from Yankee Candle the other day, but it smells like shitty grape soda. Like, straight up Faygo. This is not acceptable. I'm thinking earthy fragrances, but open to suggestions.

grab some DL&Co when they're on Gilt. They're on pretty regularly and you will not find any "baked" apple pie scent from them. The 4 I've purchased have all been really interesting and have ranged from a dark burning cedar, to a flinty gunpowder, to floral but not flowery locus petal.

One word: Diptyque.
They have a great tradition in making fragrances and scented candles. One of their classics is Firewood ( Feu de Bois ). Check the rest of the collection, they have a big variety so you will probably find something that you like. And be ready to pay a significant amount for whatever you buy.

Thanks so far. I'll certainly keep those in mind.

Anything from Yankee Candle? I'm returning mine, this shit was $26. Fortunately, a lady friend of mine bought the exact same thing with me and I smelled it at her house before burning mine, so this bitch is getting returned.

Any Yankee candles I have smelled all seem too sweet and grandma-ish.

Get reed diffusers instead of candles and go for a woodsy scent. I use Archipelago Botanicals because they're readily available at Nordstroms.

$26 for a crappy candle?! you're better off finding one at a discount store for like $5
