I get clothes from Japan all the time but they're all kind of off the wall fashion-y pieces and I rarely wear them, because I just wear jeans and white tees.....

I seriously want a pair of the Visvim Fluxus...

You need to stop posting and please get my moto done

I want it for the tradeshows in January, worn over my Wings+Horns chambray vest.

Yours,

Fok.

Granted, there ARE "brands" that many haven't heard of but 9 out of 10 of them make one or two jeans (and nothing else) using subpar denim compared to the better known brands.

I wasn't saying that the brands listed in that book all offered 10 different models and were all comparable to the stuff available in your store. Most of the brands are unheard of probably because they are in fact super-boutique and sold in places like the basement closet next to a ramen house in Osaka. There are plenty of brands like that here in the States that are the same way.

Still, "unique" doesn't have to mean "using the best denim." I remember seeing quite a few brands with details I hadn't seen used before on other jeans.

There are many flavors of denim, Kiya. You don't have to keep picking "Haterade."

Merry Christmas Drew. You rock!

One day, I'm gonna say "You know ToJ? I know where that came from. I was on the ground floor when that started."

Fok.

That will appeal well to the North American market. I gotta tell you though, that if you want to sell to Japan, that apparently, MiJ is a bad thing (compared to MiUSA).

everyone hates stuff made in their own country, reminds them of blue collar factory workers

something made in another country, on the other hand, is done by master craftsmen...

Really? Then tell me why there are so many brands that stress, or used to stress, that they were Made in the USA. Off the top of my head - Rag&Bone (used to be), Billy Kirk, Alden, Gitman Bros., Obedient Sons (used to be, now defunct), Seize sur vingt, Unis, pretty much every denim company based out of LA, Brooks Brothers Black Fleece, Freeman Sporting Goods, Engineered Garments, Quoddy, Filson, and I could go on. And these are just niche brands (Filson excluded.)

i probably shouldntve said "everyone hates..."

but ever since watching who killed vincent chin? my perception of american factory workers has gone way downhill (deerhunter didn't help either)

and i think the other factories probably use mexican labor (esp. LA, though i bet stuff made in NY does as well) (eg. american apparel--http://americanapparel.net/presscenter/articles/20060428npr1.html)

so at least when i think of "made in USA" i think of either

1. made in mexico
2. made by white factory workers who are dirty and grimy and go to strip clubs

of course when i think made in italy or japan i am totally ignorant of what goes on there so in my head its "master craftsmen"

anyways vincent chin was killed at a strip club, and i remember the murderer mentioning that he often went to such establishments (guy was married, wife nodded approvingly, a guy has got to relax, after all)

Most of the quality "mainstream" brands are getting imported already by specialty stores such as Self Edge and BiG. One thing you might want to check out is "Kapital" jeans. These are only sold (afaik) in a store in San Francisco called 'Cotton Sheep' which strangely enough is a women and baby clothing store... plus Kapital jeans. There might be some underground brands that no one really knows of that makes awesome jeans, but there's so much to do in Japan its probably not worth the time to scout those out.
Wrong about Kapital, js

Cool ****. A nice lol at people who think that BiG and SE are the end-all-be-all of what's available from Japan. Gordon and Kiya might offer the best and/or biggest brands out of Japan but there are literally dozens of brands out there that have never been on the radar of "denimheads" on sufu or even here. So what, because we haven't heard of them means they're not worth buying?

Yes but most people don't want to drop $300+ on a pair of jeans that they know nothing about. They could end up with jeans 2 sizes too small or large or with a bad color, etc. Easier to go with something tried and true so you have a general idea of how it will turn out.

Pretty sure you aren't going to talk to anyone at Kaihara unless you're in the industry, they're a mill not a manufacturer.
