I'm pretty sure she knew about segregation, all minority teens do*. She probably didn't get it because she couldn't careless about her crappy job and has other stuff on her mind, like her boyfriend, and so it was a really random comment for her. *This kind of stuff is hammered at most minority schools.

what's a minority school, like a school with over 50% Asian or a school with less than 50% white?

p.s. I went to boarding school in new england, so neither case apply

A school in a predominantly Black/Hispanic/Eskimo(etc) area with mostly minority students.
I don't know whether mostly Asian schools would place the same emphasis on slavery and civil rights, but I know mostly black and Hispanic schools do.

I've never heard of 50's day. Google's top result is this thread, and some Steve guy who manages McDonald's and wants to climb the McDonald's "latter". Guess that's what skipping out on high school to manage McDonald's restaurants does to you...
