Has anyone had a chance to try this? Not sold outside of PA except for on the internet but MI has a crap law disallowing liquor delivery by mail. I really want to try some of this so I'll have to wait till next time I get to PA on business.

From their website

"In the 1700's, it was called "Root Tea." An herbal remedy made with sassafras, sarsaparilla, birch bark and other wild roots and herbs. Native Americans taught the recipe to colonial settlers. As it was passed it down from generation to generation, it grew in potency and complexity. Particularly in the Pennsylvania hinterlands, where the ingredients naturally grow in abundance.

At the close of the 19th century, as the Temperance movement conspired to take the fun out of everything, a Philadelphia pharmacist removed the alcohol from Root Tea and rechristened it (ironically) "Root Beer". He did this so that hard drinking Pennsylvania coal miners and steelworkers could enjoy it in place of true alcoholic refreshment. He introduced his "Root Beer" in a big way at the still legendary 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. The rest, as you know, is flaccid history

Here at Art in the Age, we thought it would be interesting and fun to turn back the clock and recreate a true pre-temperance alcoholic Root Tea. We've even made it certified organic, since back then, everything was organic. This is the opposite of corporate culture. It's a genuine experience rooted in history and our own landscape. It is a truly interesting and contemplative quaff. Certainly like nothing else we have ever tasted before. It is NOT Root Beer flavored vodka or a sickly sweet liqueur."

Did you read about it in the new Mutineer magazine? I just saw it in there and it looks pretty interesting. I have not tried it but I live in PA so maybe I'll try and get it before I go back to school in a week.

Actually, I'll be in York county at the end of August so I'll pick up a bottle then. I appreciate the offer though. Post up a review of it when you get it. I'm really interested in how it drinks.

Yea I'm going to go pick it up soon and I'll try it out tonight. I'm going to try and drink it straight but I have a feeling this might be some tough stuff to drink. Any ideas on mixers? Root beer? Ginger beer maybe?

Well I just picked it up... and also got some Jamaican Ginger Beer to try mixing in with it. Gonna try it soon so I'll try and put up some tasting notes or something. Also found this video. I found this recipe on their site that uses rum, root, lemonade, and ginger beer. I picked up some Sailor Jerry Rum so I'm going to experiment and mess around with different combos.

Alright well I tasted it. It's pretty good. The first thing you notice smelling it is root beer. It's a very strong, almost concentrated root beer smell. It's also very spicy. It tastes just like it smells, like a good root beer with alcohol in it. It's pretty strong to sip on but I think with a splash of tonic or something it would be pretty good.

+1 i would think with the strong aromas that it has already a mixer would be difficult to find besides water.

Yea I tried it with coke and that really didn't work because the root beer flavor comes through too much. I'm going to try that recipe on their website with the rum and lemonade but I'll probably just end up drinking it on ice with a splash of tonic to mellow out the spiciness and alcohol a bit. I think sparkling water would be good with it too. It's definitely the most interesting spirit I've ever had. I think I may pick up a few bottles and bring it up to NY to introduce people to it.

Seems like Barenjager, which goes well with tea on a hot day. Also with hot tea on a cold day.

OK... wouldn't you just mix it with Soda Water to make a root beer-like drink?

I think they don't ship to that many places though. Luckily I live in the Philly burbs so I was able to get it 10 mins away. But if anybody wants it and can't get it let me know and we can figure something out. If you do get it try the tsunami recipe they have on their site.

Rum
Root
Lemonade
Top off with ginger beer
