Favorite canned tuna?

I grew up revolted by bagged/canned tuna - it smelled bad, and invariably wound up in some mayo-drenched culinary abortion. But since I love seared Ahi and nigiri tuna of all stripes and want to start eating healthy/cheap again, maybe I should open my mind.

So what's the good stuff for mixing into small dishes or even just eating straight up?

Oil-packed tuna is much better than water-packed. The flavor is not always remarkably better but the texture is. (You don't have to get the expensive European stuff -- althought it is very nice, and you should try it if you aren't on a tight budget -- to notice the difference.)

I avoid albacore ("white tuna") because it's more expensive, and supposedly higher in mercury, but doesn't taste any better than tongol, yellowfin, or whatever ("light tuna"). YMMV.

I must second the Costco canned albacore tuna. In fact, I read in the recent Costco magazine that weight for money-wise, Costco gives you more than any of the national brands.

Another tuna in a can that I enjoy is the one you can find in Asian grocery stores. It's mixed in some sort of tomato sauce and oil, but has vegetables (peas, onions) mixed in. Quite tasty as is or with some rice.

Take in to account that the oil packed tuna is higher in calories and fat. Also the oil they use is rarely of good quality. Get tuna packed in water drain the water and add your own oil if your looking for that extra flavor.

I always go for Tongol. It's much lower in mercury than albacore.

I also go for the cheap stuff. The reports of mercury in the bigger fish got me off the albacore when the wife was pregnant.

I've never tried the tuna in oil. I will soon.

An alternative to mayo, if you are looking for something to mix with tuna and eat, is a can of baked beans. One can tuna + one can baked beans is a pretty satisfying meal when you are very hungry and just spent all your money on clothes.

i personally like bumblebees. The meat is more shredded, which makes eating it better for me. Not a fan of tuna in big chunks.
