You don't have to do this, I wouldn't. Just wear the jeans as you would a pair of corduroys or similar pair of trousers.
I wouldn't wear a matching waistcoat and jacket with them, it would look too much like wearing half a suit, however if the waistcoat and jacket were clearly different then it would be ok, kind of "indie" looking though.

In a sort of related matter, is it a faux pas to wear a brown belt with jeans that have a black leather patch on the back?

No. If the patch is obvious enough to be an issue, you should probably be wearing different jeans.

It is a pretty small patch and the belt goes over it.

^^^^I'm sure you're fine.

As a grad student, jeans and a dress shirt is my standard wardrobe, with a sweater added in the winter and occasionally an odd jacket. I'd say I wear the combination probably 2/3 of the time.

Worn a dress shirt with jeans so many times, I lost count ages ago.

Why no socks?

I must admit that I am currently short on dress socks.
As for the jeans; apparently a lot of you wear this outfit, so what style jeans do you normally wear? Any particular brands? My go-to wear is cords for nearly all occasions. This thread is vindicating my desire to move toward jeans.

Tasseled loafers are the devil's work and are never, ever acceptable.
Other than that, carry on.

I find levi 501s work well for me, mostly because I can't be bothered to go out and find anything better I expect - I know what fits so I just buy a couple of pairs whenever I need, but for more exciting options I think there was a denim 101 thread with a fair bit of info on jeans for the non-streetwear types.

I usually wear dress shirts with (dark wash) jeans. I think that is a cool look.

Jeans are fine with dress shirts but not with ties...
Jeans can be dressyish not never enough to justify the tie element...
I know it is quite fashionable trying to fusion some elements but there are sartorial limits...
The combo elegant jeans + dress shirts+ jacket is actually my casual outfit...

I wear jeans (Levi's LVC) and a dress shirt just about everyday. I also throw on a blazer or jacket when I go out. I rarely wear ties but I would mix one with jeans and enjoy it.

I checked out the Denim 101 thread. I can't justify two hundred clams for a pair of jeans—even if the selvage is comparable to the cleavage in PSG's avatar. For that outlay I could get custom wool trousers at BB's or Andover shop and be appropriate for all occasions.
