I'm about to become a freshman in College -- What do I need?

I'm about to graduate HS and start my college journey. I am planning a Business major of some sort, probably Economics or Finance. I know I'll need 1 or 2 suits, and I want good ones. My "Mens Clothing" Collection isn't small, but it isn't filled with high quality brands. I want to spend money on ONE good suit, ONE good Dress Shirt (Maybe 2 more if you can help me find a good one) and a few good ties.

What is your price range for the suit, shirt and ties? I recomend you buy a few good pairs of dress shoes as well.

You don't need high quality brands. You just need clothing that fits well. Don't buy too much too early...Freshman 15.

As a freshman in college, I doubt you'll need more than one pair of dress shoes. I don't think I had reason to own a suit until I was a junior or senior. Perhaps you should wait until you arrive at school and can evaluate your needs.

That wont happen to me, since I exercise regularly.

I'm willing to buy a Black Label dress shirt. Ties price at around $150-180. But I'll just buy them on sale, so they'll be around $100

The weight gain is due to excess food intake (beer) on top of your normal routine. You are going to need to excercise a bit more to maintain your weight.

I know you won't like this answer, but wait a year or so and then go get a suit/shoes/shirt and stuff. Maybe now just buy a Banana Republic or HM suit. It will be fairly cheap, fit decently and you won't be sad later if you change size/style/etc. I don't know your lifestyle, but a Freshman in college doesn't need anything fancy and in fact, it is almost always a mistake to buy these kinds of things before they are needed.

Basically this. Just don't get a black one like all the pledge people.

Please don't refer to economics as "a business major of some sort"

congrats on getting into school. of course you should get a nice suit if you want one, but you'll be hard pressed to find a reason to wear one in college. do you have a nice pair of... shower slippers?

Instead of a suit, I would purchase a MTM single breasted navy blazer. This provides additional cash for 2 or more rtw shirts, socks, several ties and a of couple chinos. For undergraduates, khakis are perfectly acceptable for conference presentations and meetings.

You forgot the "....yet" on the end of your sentence. On a serious note, lurk in the buy/sell forum here. There are many deals to be had on some great articles of clothing. I'll second not buying a top of the line suit right now, just buy one that fits you well. I'll also agree with getting a nice navy blazer, a pair of well tailored trousers, and some decent shoes (again look in the buy/sell forum). Best of luck at the new school!

+1

Also, FWIW, I lost about 15 lbs my freshman year (160 down to 145). Dining Hall food sucks, no more mom's cooking, and cutting my meals down to only 3 a day did the trick.
