Cactus
Three albums with the original members in 1970 and 71. Carmine Appice and Tim Bogart from Vanilla Fudge. Jim McCarty played with Mitch Ryder and The Detroit Wheels and with Buddy Myles Express. Rusty Day, singer from the Amboy Dukes. My favorite rock band.
After '72 the band continued with new members and was not the same.

The Monks are amazing. Totally crazy, punk long before it was commercialised by Malcom McLaren and Vivviene Westwood to sell clothes.

+1. Brian Auger was amazing at the Hammond. But they were big back then. The Action. Picked up by George Martin, producer of the Beatles. The best blue-eyed soul act ever. I'll keep holding in on:

Detroit's legendary pre-punk band Death. There was a feature in the NY Times a little while back.

Audio of "Politicians In My Eyes"

Emerald Saphire and Gold also known as ESG

The most sampled group in the history of hip-hop music.

One of my favorite bands ever.

I've only recently found them (thanks to Glenn O'Brien's Tv Party), def one of the most interesting bands from the 80's SF scene, of which I'm largely ignorant. Need to start up looking more into what went on there, if there's more like this out there.

It's funny but they're actually kind of huge here in Greece. Not mainstream, but among the bands that everyone who listens to new-wave/alternative/indy/what-you-call-it-nowadays knows about. Blaine Reininger has even moved here.

What I was listening to, back in late 80's, early 90's:

The Field Mice. Indy pop at its best, from perhaps its best label, Sarah Records. The lead singer (can recall the name right now) later formed the Trembling Blue Stars
Sensitive:

The Ride. Best shoe-gazer band, heralds of the coming of brit-pop. Andy Bell, their frontman, now plays the bass for the Oasis

Leave them all behind

The Inspiral Carpets. Madchester!
This is how to feel lonely
