I never cared much for my 47s. I had a pair and sold them. I think the reason they're the big sellers (55s have hidden rivets also) is they are very trim compare to other LVCs and thats the style thats in right now.

Photos were taken with a Canon EOS5D.

Thanks for the comments. A couple of things I really like about the 1886s is the denim is incredible, the uneven single needle arcuate just rocks, and the rivets are much different.

I don't think that the 47s are particularly trim. The top block is actually quite antifit. They do taper quite a bit though. However, the much straighter fit of the 55's could be worn slimmer than the 47s, since these jeans are both shrink-to-fit, and someone could just buy a very slim pair of 55's, and shrink them, but stretch the waist while wet for a peg leg look (I'm not advocating anyone do this, btw, I think that the result would be sort of odd.)

I think that the 47s are popular for a much more prosaic reason. The preponderance of repros are based on the 47 cut, so that's what people associate with a "classic" levis fit, although there are in fact many models that are classic fits.

On another note, I think that the juxtaposition between the 33 and the 55 back pockets is quite interesting, not just in the transition from the single needle to double needle arcuate, but also in the use of different colored threads that mark modern jeans. Thanks for posting the pictures.

BTW, what year exactly did they drop the back rivets altogether? I honestly do not remember.

do 47s really taper? that seems wrong to me. they seem perfectly straight to me; stovepipes.

47s do taper, ever so slightly. I just checked mine to confirm... I believe all 501s have always tapered.

Theres definitely some hip flare going on. 47s do seem completely straight from the knee down. Maybe mine have stretched, and that's why the hem is smaller? But I just folded the hem up to the knee and its 1 or 2cm smaller.

I have a friend that has a really nice collection of origianls raw new with tags. and some LVCs and he has some late 40s and early 50s originals and the 47 LVCs are no where near the cut of his originals. I can't imagine Levis in 47 drasticly changing their cut for one year. I've read they cut the 47 LVCs trim to go along with the current trend in slim. Heres a photo of a pair of late 1990s STFs 38 waist and a pair of 47 LVCs. Both have about the same amount of washes. I would say the 55s are cut more similar to the late 90s STF 501s. Well anyway a picture can say sometimes what words can't.
