Who....I feel your pain brother.

But this forum does have its low cycles so it's kinda normal to have these periods of crap. I think I started a thread last year or before asking the same thing. Maybe it's because this is that transition time between seasons so there isnt much to talk about that already hasnt been discussed to death (looking at you BoO shirt)

and I agree there's been a lot of bullshit in the WAYWT thread and I probably only look at it 1x day if someone last responded who's reponse I might want to read. But I'll admit the drama can be entertaining from a backseat perspective.

My biggest peeve is the Dumb Threads subforum. It's become so dumb it's bad. When it was created I was hoping it would be more like threads that started off in the main forums that became so dumb (like anything started by or involving Mafoofan for example, now those are DUMB threads) that they deserved a hall of shame location. My feeling was that you shouldnt be allowed to start a Dumb thread, but that the mods would have to move it in there.

Me personally, I like threads that talk about the methods and dynamics behind choosing what you wear, rather than threads just asking for advice on how to dress. I mean, we don't ******* know *you* so how are a bunch of strangers supposed to tell *you* what kind of dress shoes to wear with your jeans?

I agree completely. I've been hanging around SF for almost 2 years now, but my post count is pretty low because, frankly, there's just not that many interesting threads out there to comment on.

The most interesting threads are ones that look at clothing, fashion, and style in a greater cultural context: What does it represent? Where is it heading? How does this fit into the greater cultural milieu? This requires a greater degree of thought on the part of posters, I suppose, but it's far more interesting for everyone than discussing what you should wear to an interview.

Maybe the mods should take it upon themselves to ask deeper, open-ended style questions once in a while?

there's just not that many interesting people in the world. if 6-10 additional people joined our chats, we wouldn;t have to post here anymore at all.

That wouldn't even begin to solve the problems the board is having.

I realize that it's difficult to quantitatively and objectively decide which thread gets the axe, but threads like this one http://www.styleforum.net/showthread.php?t=102617 should obviously deleted or moved. i'd rather have some moderation than none. and i agree with i think jet? said about 1 month requirement and restriction to ask small questions thread. (but honestly not a lot of people post in the small questions thread and i can see why it would make sense for noobs to post their noob question as a new thread).

Okay, so I think in theory this is kind of a good idea, but just pinning noobs like that is going to make people say "What, I can't post? **** this" and then they will leave. We need to entice members to contribute, and contribute significantly by which I mean contribute things that other members want to look at/read. Perhaps we can bombard new members with messages that say "MAKE FULL USE OF SEARCH FUNCTION AND READ UP ON WHAT THE HELL YOU PLAN ON TALKING ABOUT" etc... Additionally, not all new members are style-illiterate. Every once in a while we get SUFU and SZ refugees who drop one or two bad ass fits in the WAYWT and then never post again. I think it would be a little ridiculous to force these people to have to read all the marsupialed garbage everyone has to say about J Crew and Engineered Garments before they can contribute to this forum. Maybe we could devise some kind of profiling quiz/poll/what have you upon registration so that we know who knows what's up and who doesn't. Obviously the mods can't go through every member who registers, there's just too many, so I don't know. Maybe we could build it into the forum some how? I don't really know anything about how this works technically speaking, but I've been on forums with some pretty complex algorithmic **** in place. Hopefully this will get sorted out, I've been posting a lot less here lately, and reading through the forum is becoming a chore searching for the good stuff...I still appreciate this place though. Eh.

The move to affiliate threads really invigorated this place for a while, but the personal relationships seem to have faded a little. Certainly seasonal changeover and economic problems have been a part of that, but people like Secret Service and Context could up their forum presence.

Maybe start a forum-sponsored WAYWT contest, if not for affiliate credit or something like that, at least some kind of forum benefit--personalized titles, profile bling, viewer access to squirrel forum, etc.

I think Men's Clothing went down this road a few years ago. The substantive discussion has been rehashed many times before, and now the pros are more interested in the general chat sections and meetups. The reason people stick around after they lose interest in the clothing discussion is because there are actually some pretty decent and interesting people on here.

BTW, I totally agree with GS and his idea that creating new posts in Dumb Threads be restricted, and that posts need to be moved into there. Of course, that requires more active moderation, and the mods are obviously busy lately.

I guess for my part I usually just check the WWM/EG/WAYWT threads and the market and then close my browser. A lot of times the rest of the first page of the SWD forum is flooded with small question threads so I don't really bother browsing any further. I imagined good threads are being made and overlooked because they get pushed back by the flood of small question threads...

Dumb idea. DT is one of the most intelligent sections of the forum. Leave it alone.
