If you are looking for jeans with very good denim and very simple treatments, Blue and Green and Self Edge are going to be your best bets, by far, though depending on your body type, I think that RRL and Jeanshop may also be worth looking at. And they are not really that far apart, certainly not by DC standards. Self Edge has a more "Americana" feel, and their jeans reflect this. If you want a heavyweight pair of jeans, and clothes from lines like Mister Freedom, Self Edge is the place to go to first. Blue and Green reflects a more fashion minded sensibility, which is reflected in their carrying difficult to find (in the USA) lines with seasonal collections like Factotum, ato, and Fullcount. I life both stores. Very different vibes. I would recommend that you visit both of them, as the brand mixes are quite different.
IMO, this is the best answer so far. Self Edge and Blue In Green, between the two of them, carry the best denim brands that Japan has to offer. There are a few overlapping brands between the two stores, and there are small stylistic differences between the two stores' brands like Fok stated, but by and large, the quality of the product you will find is equal between the two stores. IMO, from a fabric and quality-of-construction standpoint (cuts are more subjective), you won't find much better denim out there than what these two stores have.
what about a place that sells decent but inexpensive <$80 demin? I don't wear many jeans so when I buy I don't like to drop too much, ya know? I found a decent pair awhile back at buffalo exchange but I don't like sifting through used **** all the time....
what are the fees that big/se/etc charge for chainstitching jeans not purchased at their stores?
