I came across a vintage clothing seller and they have an rrl denim shirt size xl on the tag but dimension they gave me are for a medium. Can someone explain why this would be the case? Is this because it was made for the Chinese or Japanese market?

In my experience with Brooks Brothers items a Japanese-market shirt may be slightly slimmer, but only slightly. It sounds like this may be a boy's or women's item or just something that was mislabeled. It happens.

Many workwear brands also make masculine styles for women, so you'll sometimes see a women's garment mislabeled for men on sites such as eBay. A women's XL might be a man's medium, in this case, but the seller doesn't know because of how the shirt buttons (intentionally masculine given the genre).

Other possibility is the seller didn’t understand the question or is a scammer and just copied the measurements from RL site which typically only has measurements for medium.
