My new tartan jacket, what goes with it?

Hi there, Picked up this beautiful tartan jacket in London a couple of months ago but being my first piece of tartan ever I'm wondering what would go with it in terms of pant and shirt?

I have a dinner party tomorrow night and am thinking a white linen shirt and black jeans? Any other suggestions would be much appreciated!

Have you established which clan's tartan you are borrowing or is it Clan Madup - on your mother's side? Looks like a manufactured red pattern rather than a tartan known unto a clan.

I suppose jeans might work but it really only has two places to its repertoire. Scotland where it will prompt a little less adverse comment and will mark you out as trying (and failing) and a bonfire as every where else it will prompt comments that you have failed.

Doubtless not what you might want to read but it does not promote any enthusiasm, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, this beholder does not see it.

Thanks for the encouraging reply GBR (not)

I don't believe it's a specific clan tartan as such, my Scottish mother in law mentioned it was similar to something or other but I don't remember what it was.

I think it's a beautiful jacket, i've worn it once before (and yes, in Scotland when I was visiting there after buying it in London) and received very positive feedback. They may have just been being polite or nice I guess, me being from Australia they may have been thinking.. aw how nice for him to make an effort..

Perhaps the photo doesn't do it justice, I don't know. Anyway, I'm thinking my original idea of a white shirt and black jeans will work.

You asked, if you want to be seen in it fine.... People are generally polite in the UK when they meet someone face to face and will berate you later. Here you must expect a critique and that does not always sit with a poster's preference.

Aren't "clan" tartans essentially modern creations?

I believe there are traditional clan tartans that are kept alive by kilt makers, family tailors etc.

Late 18th, early 19th century.

Tartans go back into the mists of time; kilts to the late 16th century.

But, AFAIK, "Official" clan tartans are first recognized and recorded by Wilsons of Bannockburn in preparation for the Royal Progress of George IV.

So...grey or green flannels and a white shirt. Tan or taupe cavalry twills, but not in the evening.
