Looking into Grenadine Ties

Hello,

Have never owned any grenadine, so I'm looking for a good place to start. I see Hober and Chipp thrown around a lot. I've also seen some stuff from Drake, but I'm not too sure I want my first grenadine tie to cost $120+. Hober and Chipp seem to be more in my price range, and both offer the color I am currently looking for (slate blue).

So if anyone has a preference of Hober vs Chipp, or any other good brands they could possibly make an argument, I'd love to hear it.

Also, do grenadine ties require any additional care? Or can I treat them as I would any other silk tie?

Sam Hober over Chipp all day, every day. I no longer buy grenadines from anyone else.

I have both and like both. You'll probably still pay twice the price for Hober over Chipp but Hober provides a more personal service as the ties are made to order so you can choose length and width. Also AFAIK Chipp only does garza finas so your preferences may play into the decision equation. Remember that grossas will have a more noticeable texture but will also be more prone to getting threads pulled if you work around plastic ring binders etc!

I also have both, but I find the Chipp product does not hold a candle to Hober's.

Exquisite Trimmings RTW on sale is an excellent deal. Good deal full priced too. They may have a Father's Day Sale going on now, though

As far as care, just make sure than you don't have jagged fingernails (like just after being cut), as they can snag. Still, I have a dozen grenadines and after years of wear, I think I've snagged two. And neither is noticeable.

I have Hober, Drake’s, Vanda, and Tyrwhitt. Never had a Chipps.

I must say that the one Drake’s I own (which I bought used) produces the best knot of the bunch and has the loveliest hand, but at the full retail of £125.00 (which at the current rate of exchange is around 180 USD) is well out of my price range. I’m never spending that much for a tie (unless some Weimar Republic level of inflation lies in our future …).

The last time I checked Hobers are selling for $85, which for full custom I think is a bargain, especially if, like me, you benefit from an atypical length.

The one Vanda I have doesn’t measure up to the Hober, but it’s an early one and I’ve been told that they’ve since improved.

The Tyrwhitt is at the bottom of the bunch, though it’s by no means bad.

In short, of the ones I own Hober would be my recommendation (taking bang for the buck into consideration).

One maker I haven’t tried is Cappelli, who also does custom lengths. Currently 90.00€. He certainly makes some beautiful ties.

All but two of my grenadines are from Drakes. One is from New and Lingwood, which has a webstore. The other is from Bigi via NMWA. The Bigi has a 7 fold construction.

I am also in the market for a few grenadines. I have a Sam Hober that I bought on B&S here, and it's a great knot. I typically do a FIH with a moderate spread collar, and I'm a bigger guy, so l like a substantial knot. Are there any other places I should check for a larger knot-producing grenadine, or should I just do Sam Hober?

Interestingly, unlike @Academic2 , my Drake's grenadines produce, to my taste, a rather small knot. I asked David (of Sam Hober) to make me a tie that was a bit wider through the knot area, in order to produce a more substantial knot. And he did exactly that, and I'm very pleased with the resulting couple of ties. I can tie a tight knot that is still decently sized. I have ties from all the vendors mentioned here (not all are grenadines), but for classic grenadine I would not purchase from anyone other than Sam Hober.
