The Sartorialist calls this

Jil Sanderesque

I have also seen some other Jil Sander suits being worn (and not only by young ones) that look elegant but in a different way. But not being able to pin down what is the reason they look like they do.

I.e. if one was to go bespoke and wanted a better fitting Jil Sander like suit, what would one ask for?

Look forward to your responses.

IME, Soft, relaxed shoulder going into a slim chest/body (not a lot of waist suppression in the grand scheme of things), narrow armholes/sleeves, and narrow trousers. That suit does have a Jil Sander-like cut to it, though it doesn't appear quite as narrow.

edit: La Guy explained it a lot better than I did. /goes back to eating

Probably your best bet. I doubt too many traditional retailers are going to understand the look, or how to go about recreating it accurately. However, in general:

Narrow, natural shoulders
Straight and narrow through the body, with only a whisper of waist suppression, essentially no swell in the chest.
Medium button stance and narrow to medium lapels. Medium to high gorge (depends on the season)
Moderately open quarters.
Mid rise flat front, slim trousers

Essentially, the Jil Sander look is very austere. Probably the most sober of all the minimalists.

Thanks

That is such a good way of summarizing it. In one of the magazines there was a middle aged gentleman, (and not too skinny) wearing the JS suit, with those rounded shoes and looked quite elegant. The trousers had a negative break, not as short and Thom Browne but the bottom edge was floating above the shoe.

I think LA guy nailed it too. Jil Sander suits are generally not as skinny as some might expect. It's definitely not a fashion victim cut.

I like JS a good deal because it fits my body very well. Being 6'3 and 170 with a 39" chest, I have a rather streamlined appearance. JS can be very body-hugging, but if that's your frame: it's a nice look.

The MTM service starts at $3200 and runs up to about $6500. You also get a tag that says "Jil Sander for Your Name".

^^ Is that still around post-Raf Simons? Even then, jesus christ, that's expensive as ****. The most I've paid for a JS suit is $600.

Post Raf? Raf is the current creative director.

OTR Jil usually starts out at about $1700 so I gather you got it from eBay,Yoox or a very fashiony one at the end of season?

They are trying to branch out and do more of a "Jil Sander Sartorialist" line that is the classic Sander in look and construction (albeit not made in Germany anymore) which distances itself from Raf's fashion work.

Sorry, not sure why I had post- in there, typing while talking.

Yeah, both of mine (2) were yoox/out of season/etc. Neither are particularly fashiony. I really like the casual elegance of the drape and cut on her 'Tailor Made'* suits, so I'm happy to learn that they are revisiting the classic Sander look with that Sartorial line... The price though, ouch. *Any insights to exactly what this implies? I can tell they are fully canvassed and hand-finished in a few spots (sleeve head), but I don't know much about this sub-line.

Sorry dad.

cough: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/infer
—Usage note Infer has been used to mean “to hint or suggest” since the 16th century by speakers and writers of unquestioned ability and eminence: The next speaker criticized the proposal, inferring that it was made solely to embarrass the government. Despite its long history, many 20th-century usage guides condemn the use, maintaining that the proper word for the intended sense is imply and that to use infer is to lose a valuable distinction between the two words. Although the claimed distinction has probably existed chiefly in the pronouncements of usage guides, and although the use of infer to mean “to suggest” usually produces no ambiguity, the distinction too has a long history and is widely observed by many speakers and writers.

I've never seen a Made in Germany Jil Sander jacket. Mine are all Italian in origin, I believe by Belvest.
