Does anybody have any good photos of this cuff, thinking it looks interesting, but doubt any tailor in HK would know what it is/what to do without looking at a good illustrative photo/picture first I understand that its function stemmed as something to tuck frilly/long shirt sleeves in on the sword hand?...I'm thinking of joining the fencing club so need an outfit too. haha

I was looking at the shirt, trying to figure out what you were talking about. Are there any other examples of this you could find? I've never seen it before, that I know of.

Not the shirt, but the jacket, notice how there is a turnback cuff on the suit jacket itself, it looks quite spiffy, albeit functionally useless (like the buttons as well)

I found a few on some Scottish formal jackets.

I guess it's just a turnback, yeah... The one on his jacket is just decorative, but actually, if you designed it right, this could be used to adjust the length of the cuff while maintaining a uniform appearance. For example, many buttonholes could be cut, and 3-4 cufflink-style studs or button links could be used to pin the cuff at the right length. Could be interesting on a military styled coat - roped shoulders, epaulettes maybe, etc.

Yves Saint Laurent used this cuff on women's clothes, many times, in many different ways. Adds a swashbuckling touch, particularly when accompanied by decorative buttons. Personally, I haven't seen a gauntlet cuff used on men's garments, outside the theater or cinema. If you've got functioning buttonholes on a jacket, open them up, turn back the cuffs: voila. Gauntlets.

I have several jackets with turnback cuffs. This style was more current in the early 60s.

Usually one button, or none.

Do you want to see pix?

To have them with working buttons looks v odd to me.

Pics would be lovely! Thanks!....I'm guessing the "trend" is to pair these cuffs w/ a more formal sharp jacket?

A few months ago I met with Ira at H Herzfeld and he mentioned the turnback cuff as an elegant option for a bespoke suit jacket. He said it was more a turn-of-the century thing, like the DB waistcoat. I can't find much literature to support that, but Ira's never steered me wrong before.

Maybe it's not for you (I don't have any either), but I have seen them many times, and they are really not all that conspicuous. I certainly wouldn't call them a grave mistake.

It's possible, I suppose, that some people feel the same way about a DB vest. Those are much more conspicuous, and I wear them regularly.

No, I gotta say those would stick out more than a DB vest.

So did you end up getting a jacket w/ turnback cuffs?
