With the recent explosion in Antiquing threads, I've started to wonder about doing it myself. I am thinking about going from black to a pewter color (brown with grey tint). Curious if anyone else has gone from black to brown?

Only do it if you are not afraid to lose the shoes in question. The chemicals you use can leave the shoe looking like an infected burn victim.

I figured as much. Probably not the best route to go on the first try (darker->lighter vs lighter->darker).

Thanks for quelling this notion. I had tried to convince myself it would be a bad idea, but for some reason was hanging on to the thought it might work.

It's probably low risk. If you mess it up terribly, you can go back to black.

I remember a thread where someone when from black to brown quite successfully, but I can't find it.

Huh- I suppose dark brown... seems like it would take a lot of acetone and serious elbow grease to remove enough of the black. Can't say that I've tried, though.

I'm kind of curious to see how pewter shoes would turn out. My big complaint about black shoes is that they never develop a sexy patina with use, and just start to look worn out. I wonder if grey shoes would work in the same contexts as black, only might age well?

I decided that I would never wear these as black so I couldn't really lose. I now wear them nearly every day.

Perfect. This was the exact post I had in mind! I remember coming across this a while ago and thinking that was a good job.

Thanks.

Don't let any crimson collared stalkers distract you while you're antiquing.

I asked Tony Gaziano and Dean Girling about anitquing a future MTO black calf leather shoe order similar to what Foster's does

They noted their experience with this is that it weakens the leather but they have perhaps an alternative method which antiques less...I might try it when Dean is back in town come April...then I'll try to get more details to see if this is viable...and should only be tried by a shoe maker

Will do. Anyone remember the recent post where the dude used a bleach alternative? I'm looking to pick some up.
