I have a new pair of Allen Edmonds McAllisters in Walnut Calf on the way, and I'd like to be prepared to care for them as I should. Should I treat them or do anything before I start wearing them? I would like to buy some cream or polish to keep them looking good, but I've never used more than a basic type of cream for leather boots or casual shoes.

What kind of brushes or applicators will I need?

I have cedar shoe trees and flannel bags already.

Thanks for any tips...

Did you think to yourself prior to your post that "boy!, I must be the very first person EVER on this forum to have had a question about what to do with a new pair of shoe!"

These guys are just being jerks.

Use light brown or natural cream (if walnut is a light color...otherwise use brown). Wax is not advisable alone (though can be applied on top of cream) and is not really necessary at this stage.

Anything will work for the buffing/rubbing from an old t-shirt to a horsehair brush.
Enjoy your new shoes!
