The State of Black Tie: Your Observations

What a smashing couple you two make! Too bad you're not wearing a corsage, then you'd have the perfect place to hide the mic. Though, I once saw a mic hidden in the bow tie, though that is quite the elaborate process to pull of.

I think it's funny that in some pictures one looks better than the other and vice-versa in other pictures. Can see why you're having trouble deciding. Sometimes, I wish people could post videos of them in their tuxes so we could more easily appraise. I would follow gimpwiz's suggestion and get...

PL is the most formal whereas SL is a step down. As DB is least formal jacket style, IMO DB/SL works great for a less formal BT - restaurant, lounge, casino, someone's home, etc. while the PL lets you fit in better with higher level BT events - galas, balls, dinner with the royal family, etc...

The State of Black Tie: Your Observations

"...single breasted peaked coat, a white vest (identical to the one worn with white tie), wing collar shirt (ditto) and black bow tie." Am straining my admittedly limited faculties to remember if I've ever seen someone wear an outfit meeting this description (specifically the white vest w/black...

Agree with Jazzthief (great name!) and Mark from Plano. Will only add that looking at the picture, am guessing this is early to mid-thirties and a viewing of the movies of this period show a lot of mixing of white tie and black tie elements. Basically, I think you have two things going on. BT...

Wow! Great summary of the thread. You really nailed it! I'd forgotten about all The Chai's outfits. Hope he's getting a chance to use them all. Also loved your "anthropology" observation. Will just note that the reason, I suspect, Sean Connery is wearing a NLDJ in Goldfinger is that he's at a...

Congrulations! Did you have a favorite part? I think mine was the very spirited and lengthy debate on the merit of notched lapels. Things got a bit heated, as I recall. :fence:

    1) Vents are traditionally less formal, as they derive from horse riding outfits, but they do serve to promote drape and comfort so have been allowed into formal dress. I went double vented for my wedding tux even though I know it doesn't look as good when shot from behind. Men of action like...

Sounds like you'll look great which is the number one goal for your wedding day. 1) No vent is most correct and will look the best but 1-2 vents gives you more mobility for things like putting your arms around someone for a picture for example. These days, people are just impressed that you're...

Totally agree. And let's be real. He's just going to watch a movie. Nothing to go all out for.

Agree with the others that ventless is ideal. It just looks better. The only downsides for me have been that I have the tendency to put my hands in my pockets, thus killing the visual benefits of ventless. Also, personally, I do find side vents give me better range of motion. The latter point is...

The State of Black Tie: Your Observations

If it helps, for my wedding I went with patent leather slippers because, being such a big day, I didn't want to worry about whether my laces were tied or if my shoes were scuffed. I would also suggest that you get a pair with good soles - good year welt or Blake stitch- as you'll be on your feet...

The State of Black Tie: Your Observations

Funny enough, that was when I would have problems. In group photos, when I stretch my arms out around people on either side it pulls up the front of the buttoned SB shawl jacket so as to look a little silly. With the cummerbund on I feel it makes it okay for me to unbutton at those moments. A...

The State of Black Tie: Your Observations

I added the cummerbund to my SB kit because I found that realistically, I couldn’t always keep my jacket buttoned at events and thus wanted to have something there to keep the formal look.
