From my experience, glasses are usually put in their case and placed inside of the casket to be buried, usually within the deceased's reach. Of course, it is all up to the discretion of the family. It's somewhat similar to the rule of hats (atleast for men) being placed around their crossed hands; something not worn, but of utmost importance for the afterlife. Granted, all services that I've attended have been open casket.

^What an incredibly heathen notion! As someone who has worn glasses for the past 57 years, I should like to think that if there is some sort of afterlife, I would at least have 20/20 vision.

Of course, I firmly believe that heathenism is the natural religion of humanity. The Abrahamic faiths only go back 4,000 years. Contrast that with tens of thousands of years of dancing shamans in the caves impressing themselves on our ancestral memories. (And most of my ancestors were converted to Christianity only about 1,400 years ago.) This sort of visceral, hereditary heathenism often surfaces in burial practices, as evidenced above.

(I'm surprised I missed such a thread when it has been around for so long!)

No worries, J. We'll all have sexy robot bodies in 20 years and you won't need glasses anymore. You can still wear them as an accessory but you won't need them.

I imagine bionic eyes will be available by the end of the 2010s.

A friend recently posed these questions:

When Apple comes out with its version of Google Glass, will it be called the iEye? And will the commercials feature Ozzy Osborne singing "Crazy Train"?
