As others have said, you need not spend that much money. Make sure it is either a straight collar or one with a slight spread. Broadcloth or pinpoint. Button cuffs are preferable.

I do not like the 'non-iron' look and would not recommend it. If you do wish to go that route, then go with CT and touch up; they look the most natural and untreated. Otherwise, go for Land's End. They are cheaper and just as good if not better than the standard non-iron of BB and JAB.

Exactly. Find one that fits and/or get it tailored to fit you well.

This is particularly bad in the midwest and the south, where people somehow think it's perfectly acceptable to do so.

That's because it is perfectly acceptable. Not necessarily my choice, but perfectly fine -- at least out here on the Los Angeles prairie.

To repeat good advice from others: get a decent non-transparent shirt, makes sure it fits you well, and obviously wear it clean and ironed.

One more thing:

By a new pack of thick white undershirts. Wear one of those under the white shirt at the interview instead of the almost worn out ones most men wear every day. That will improve the way you look more than a $100 shirt will.

That would certainly depend on where you are at, I'd assume. Having committed that mistake in the past, and been told rather nicely that it was not an acceptable combo on three separate occasions, I don't do it any more. Incidentally, two of those occasions were by non-Americans; one was. It would seem that there are other people who would agree with me. Now, whether or not you do it is perfectly up to you, of course, but to me, button down shirts with ties and suits look weird, and I was quite relieved to note that I was not the only one (and that it wasn't without cause).

Now, the US being what it is (i.e. ignoring tradition and custom and going with what folks want to do anyway*), one can quite comfortably do what one pleases partly because no one cares, and mostly because almost no one knows. That, however (in my opinion), does not make it right (immaterial of whether or not Cary Grant can wear it, or pull it off). My two cents, of course. Cheers. *I do not mean this in an inflammatory manner; merely that the US has a consistent track record of going against what are customarily accepted norms, reminiscent of a streak of rebelliousness frequently found in adolescent children.
