Leica M3 Gold No. 834000 (1958)

One of only two known original by Leitz gold plated M3, with gold plated collapsible Summicron 2/5cm no.1379604, according to delivery records the camera was shipped to Ernst Leitz New York, illustrated in colour by Jim Lager vol.I p.156 (...it represents one of the most spectacular assemblages encountered by the author in over 25 years of research), the camera is offered for the first time and represents one of the most exiting and rare Leica's in existence, the second gold plated M3 was offered at Christie's Auction last year estimated for 112,000-150,000 Euro.

Estimate: 50.000 - 70.000 Euro
Starting price: 30.000 Euro

Cool, but solid gold would have been a lot cooler. Basically unusable because of the weight, but a gold camera would make for one hell of a collectors item.

You are absolutely correct. I'm surprised that it's going to auction, though. There's a huge private and institutional market.
