Is it normal to see the lining through the sleeves of a fresco suit ?

Hello everyone,

I’ve lurked for some time now and I have a question that finally made me sign up in order to tap SF’s cumulative wisdom.

I have just bought my first Charcoal suit and it’s in Fresco, a fabric I’ve been interested in ever since I heard about it because I am always too warm.

I just received the suit from Fursac (French RTW) and trying it my wife told me the sleeves were shimmering.

Now I think what’s happening is that the sleeve lining is reflecting light through the weave.

Is that it ? Is it expected for a Fresco suit to shimmer ? Doesn’t lining sleeves defeat the purpose of an open weave ?

Anyhow, I think I’ll be returning it because the modesty of charcoal seems wasted with this light show.

The picture I joined shows the issue quite well I think, but let me tell you it’s even more pronounced irl.

All the best,

P.S : the shimmer is the same with a white or a blue shirt.

yeah it looks like you can see the lining through the fabric. Lining should have been dark.

Even for open-weave fabrics like Fresco I prefer a sleeve lining because it makes the jacket much easier to put on and take off, and the sleeve is less likely to 'grab' the shirt fabric and bunch up. So you could have the sleeve lining removed, but I personally would not recommend it.

What kind of sleeve linings would you recommend to not lose the "airy heat release" quality of the Fresco?

I've actually wanted to try out a ready made Fresco and see how it really looks & feels in person given that it feels like they holy grail for summer / heat suiting.

May I ask how & what ways you searched so as to find Fresco in a RTW store?

Cupro fabric (Bemberg is a well-known brand) is pretty standard.

Any lining does inhibit air movement to some extent. On the other hand, I really think the disadvantages of unlined sleeves in terms of getting the jacket on/off and possibly worse sleeve drape outweigh the possible benefit of some increase in breathability in the arms. I suppose you could always have the sleeve lining removed if you really wanted, but personally I wouldn't recommend it. You are better off having the jacket body half-lined or quarter-lined.

Here is something from Permanent Style on lining

It may go without saying that if you are trying to minimize heat insulation as much as possible in hot weather, forgo the jacket entirely rather than trying to alter the jacket’s construction. I don’t wear a jacket to work during summer at all. That’s when I break out the slacks and brown split toes.
