Hi all,

Really not happy with the edges on my C&J Lingfield Chelseas so wondering if there’s anything I can do to remove it? Kirby Allison recommends using 800 grit sandpaper, but just wanted to get other people’s thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

Are you talking about the heel, or the sole? If it really bothers you, you definitely can smooth out the edge with sandpaper. That is pretty natural on the sole, especially if there is no protective rubber insert.

If you do decide to use sandpaper on the sole, be careful not to scratch the upper, which is easy to do.

After you sand it, you will have removed the color and protective coating that was applied at the factory, so you might have to re-dye the edge and apply some beeswax, best if heated with an iron.

You could buy a sole edge iron. I bought one recently from Paul Brunngård which I have found quite useful in restoring edges; after using it, I apply some Saphir black dye to the edge.
